Is there any way around the 6 month weight loss program? Or is there any way to make it go by faster, or has anyone ever had their doc work with them so that they didnt have to wait the actual 6 months??? Just curious! THANKS!!

If your insurance company requires it, then there is usually no way around it.  I know it is hard to wait because I have been where you are now.

If your insurance requires it, just do it. My insurance requested an additional diet (I already did three) and I requested a peer-to-peer review. The review didn't work and I was ordered to complete the program.

Insurance companies and doctors put these programs in place for reasons. *IMHO* they want to make sure you can follow a plan. After surgery, your lifestyle change is no punk. The vitamins, water, protein and everrrrrryyyytttthing else is very strict.

Good luck!

No - there's not.

And I'm glad they don't waiver on it, actually.  You need that 6 months to truly know whether or not you have your 'head' in the game - and it starts to prepare your body for what you're about to undertake.

It took me over 8 months to get approved - I had to go thru 2 denials then arbitration before my insurance finally gave in - this is a long process, a long journey.  And there's no shortcuts - and well there should be none this is a tool you have to work AT and work FOR.

good luck!

If you have Aetna they have a 3 month one in addition to the 6 month diet

Some ins companies will let u use Weigh****chers or Jenny Craig, as long as the person u was working with was a lic nutritionist that monitored your diet. So if u did any of those programs they may help u out. If not then, u will have to do the 6mo. I know it seems like forever!
Hope this helps

I concur with what everyone else says. Also wanted to add it will fly by. You think that it is forever when you are going through it but it really isn't forever. Take that time to master changing your lifestyle. It will be easier for you after the fact. Plus as you are losing weight during that 6 months that's less that you have to lose after the surgery.

Its all up to the insurance carrier.  This period is a perfect delay tactic.  One mistake and you start from square one so do not screw it up.  They can even deny you claiming you did not try hard enough forcing you to appeal to get approval.

I did not need this for my approval.  My original date was just 6 weeks after my initial appointment.  All my insurer required was a weight loss/ obesity history.  I don't know of anyone getting around this requirement if their carrier required it.

My insurance is Aetna and they have updated thier policy to an "either or" meaning either the 6 mos or 3 mos with a registered dietician, surgeon, pcp, psycologist ect. But you do have to look at it as a training session like I do. I feel like it helps give me a lot of perspective. Hang in there.
