O.k. everybody, It seems that everybody has an oppinion about the best kind of protein shake. Unfortunately, I have discovered by trial and error that I am allergic to the stuff. It only takes a few sips of a protein shake, and I am paying for it all day My throat constricts and I can barely breathe, and not to mention the head-aches. It takes a good two hours of constan****er drinking to get that ucky feeling out of my throat. I'm also lactose intolerant so milk and cheese are out too. What can I grab to supliment myself with 60+ grams of protein...when I am unable to get anywhere close to that??? Any ideas or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. HugsGinger

Are you allergic to all kinds of protein shakes? Some are whey protein, some are soy protein, etc. I'm wondering if there's something out there that may work for you. Can you eat protein bars? I've found a few that I like, but you may have the same problem if the protein component is the same as what's in the shakes you've tried. Have you talked to your nutritionist to see if he/she has any other suggestions? Are you doing okay with other food sources of protein (beef, chicken, fish, shellfish, beans, etc.)? I get all my daily protein from food and only use protein bars when I'm on the run and don't have time to eat real food. Perhaps you'll eventually be able to do the same... Good luck finding a happy solution to your problem! Kellie

Hi Kellie, Thanks for posting. I have only tried whey protein shakes. In a pre-op class we were told that soy protein doesn't digest right. I really don't have any contact with my surgeon and nutritionist. I was kinda left holding the bag so to speak when I had my surgery 8 months ago. I am able to handle beef better than chicken so far. I haven't tried fish yet. I'm just now beginning to get an appitite. I do love Taco Bell refried beans with salsa..that's my extent of protein that I can count on so far. What brand of protein bars have you found that you like??? HugsGinger

Hi, Well the whey is from milk, so that is logical they make you sick. There is an egg protein supplement too. It is supposed to be a little better, since it is animal based instead of plant. There is also rice protein, but it should be at the bottom of your list because it is not as absorbed. So sorry... Shellie

Hi Shellie, There you go! I did not know that whey was milk based. That would be why I get so sick I can handle little sprinkles of grated cheese, that's as far as that goes with dairy products..even lactate doesn't help. I think I'll try soy milk...however..my mind will probably tell me if I drink that...I'll be sick..even though I know that it is lactose free. Wow, I never heard of an egg protein supplement..I'd better hop over to my health-food store and check it out...thanks, I really appreciate your thoughts! HugsGinger

Hi Ginger, I've been eating Pure Protein protein bars. I don't know what the heck is in as far as whey or the other. I also drink Isopure Protein shakes(just checked these are 100% Ion whey protein so those are out) I mix mine with milk but was told SoyMilk would work also. I was lactose intolerant before suregery but haven't had too many problems since. Isn't that strange? umm..lets see the bars have whey protein also. Sorry bout that I just went to check and see what the ingredients listed. The carb wise bars that I eat have 21 grams of protein in one and they have a blend of proteins so maybe they wouldn't be so bad. I saw some type of egg protein supplement but I cannot tolerate eggs so I bought a chewable protein supplement. I haven't received it yet but I'll let you know how it works when it arrives. I also eat those little 3 oz cans of Tuna. I've tried the lunch kits too and they are pretty good. Sometimes I'll just buy a piece of fish at the market put some curry or seafood seasoning on it and some onions (sounds gross but tastes good) and a little parkay spray butter and it makes for a high protien, low fat, low carb meal. I have a really hard time getting in all my protein. There is NO way I can even attempt to with food alone. I depend on my shakes and bars very heavily. Some days are better than others but I try. Will your insurance pay for you to visit with a nutritionist? I really like chatting with mine, she eases my fears and gives me ideas for things to try. I have to pay out of pocket for mine she isn't part of my insurance but it's sooooo worth it. I think for 30 mins sessions it's like 44 bucks and then an hour is upwards of 60 or so. We usually just do 20 or 30 minute sessions now. PLUS I get weighed on a fairly accurate scale. I've been weighing on mine but haven't been to the gym in two weeks so I haven't posted on the Monday weigh ins. My scale says I'm down to 215...I sure hope it's right. I'm so silly I move it around the room and then put my two 3lb weights on it to make sure it reads correctly. So I'm crossing my fingers that when I go back to the gym on Monday that my scale is right. Good luck with your protein and if I come across anything I'll let you know..hey I have a website that I'm going to order some bars off of I'll email it to ya. Hugs, Jamie

Have you tried tuna a 6 oz can of tuna has around 30 grams of protein, sometimes it takes me two or three times to eat it all but it is really a great protein booster.

I have been able to meet my protein goals without using protein drinks although I do use Power Crunch bars for breakfast sometime. Do you like to cook? Is there a reason why you have only done chicken? How far out are you? I have a great crispy baked fish or chicken recipe I could send you if you want. I make a lot of stews because I can reheat them easily. I eat the meat first and then any veggie if I'm hungry. I cook for just me (and my dog but he's easy to please!), so I make the dish on the weekend and eat on it all week. You might also check into some "Cooking Light" cookbooks. You might need to modify the recipes for both your allergy and bariatric needs, but they can be good starting points. Best of luck, Sally

Hi Sally, Yeah for you for being able to get your protein in without protein drinks I have done the shredded meat/crock-pot stew before..the family eats it like crazy for a few meals..never thought to "hide" it for myself..great idea!! I'd love your crispy baked fish recipe if you get a chance to e-mail it to me or post it to share with everybody here..where do you buy your pwer crunch pars?? I've never tried a protein bar. I never thought I'd need one. Thanks all! HugsGinger
