Nees information and referrals.
Hi, I had a lap RNY on 9-29-06 and have lost 50 lbs. and my BMI is down to 33.4. I am generally please with my surgery and am now interested in trying to encourage my brother to consider WLS. He is 40 years old, pretty good health, but is weighing in at about 440 lbs. He is an awesome brother and I really want to be able to help him and provide him some feedback from peolple who have had surgery (in addition to myself). I think the mortality rates generally have terrified him understandably. Any referrals for docs in Houston, Texas or surrounding areas that have good ratings? Also, anyone with similar stts and BMI 65+--what surgery type, and why?
Thank you
Mary
Dear Mary,
I can't provide a referral as I no longer live in Houston (raised there), but my BMI was about 66 when I had the surgery. I had the lap rny and have had great results. I chose that over the band because I had too much to lose and wanted the faster and greater results. Those were the only two surgery choices I had here. I have lost 205 pounds in 14 months and still have about 25 more to go. I did not have any complications. I do have to take several stool softeners daily, and if I eat too fast, chew too little, etc., I will throw up.
My surgeon was concerned about being able to do the surgery laproscopically because of my size, but he was able to do it. I think part of it depends on how you carry your weight. If the instruments can't reach or the doctor can't see, it might have to be done open.
The surgery has been great for me, but it isn't for everyone. I hope your brother will consider it.
Best of luck,
Sally
