Marge, Most of my cart is fruit, veggies, beef tenderloin, chicken, and red snapper! Now I do pick up a bag of chips every week for my husband (I sneak a bite or 2 here and there!).. I buy soy milk and non fat milk.. eggs.. cheese.. no sugar added ice cream.. coffee.. creamer.. splenda... and those darn da vinci s/f syrups... thats the staples of my household! Not very exciting I know, but we eat good meals every day... I dont buy any of my protein at the store. I do all my ordering from DPS nutrition.. They carry the protein that I love and cant live without quite cheap and shipping is very cheap with them.. So once every couple months I place an order... Its the only way I can afford to drink 80g a day of protein.. Amber

One thing that HAS changed for my shopping is that I always go with a list! I was bad not to do this before surgery and now that I am post-op and my eating habits have changed, I find that I too often forget things without a list and I live 25 miles from the closest grocery store! That makes for an expensive trip back to the store to get a forgotten item or two! Before surgery, we'd just improvise or eat something different. Now, post-op, we plan the whole week's dinner meals and I make a thorough shopping list and then add on any staples I need and some lunch stuff to fill in gaps between leftovers (my normal lunch foods). Each and every week, I buy the following items without fail: boneless/skinless chicken breasts beef (usually lean stew beef that gets put in crock pot dishes) ground turkey/turkey sausage fresh green peppers fresh tomatoes apples (my daughter can't live without her Granny Smiths!) whole grain English muffins deli-sliced turkey, roast beef, and/or ham (usually goes in an omlet) sliced cheese and shredded cheese milk Egg Beaters (can't stand regular eggs anymore) Special K protein plus cereal Splenda or the Altern (generic Splenda) if it is a week I make it to Walmart bottled water and sometimes flavor packets canned diced tomatoes canned black beans salsa sour cream ricotta cheese (most weeks) peanuts turkey pepperoni That is a good start anyway! LOL I feed two teenagers too, so there are always items in my cart that we can not or should not eat but that I allow them to have on occasion. And, there are sometimes items that they won't touch... I don't do protein shakes, so never have any of that sort of stuff. The only protein powder I ever buy these days is an occasional tub of Unjury unflavored. Can't get that locally! LOL I'd love to see more responses to this post just because it IS a good way to stimulate our mind and come up with new meal/snack suggestions! Hugs, Lea 410/290/175?

Marge, I can't believe you are asking me what I buy at the store. Shrimp, shrimp, and more shrimp. In fact, we went to Costco today to get a folding table and a shelf, and while we were there, we picked up another bag of shrimp. It's an expensive addiction, so I'm glad I get 14 or 15 meals out of each bag. Costco must-haves for me include Crystal Light lemonade powder, string cheese, and sugar free popsicles. We usually get one of their rotisserie chickens, too -- I can tolerate dark meat on chicken and my sister eats the white meat, and then uses the rest to make her nasty chicken soup (I don't eat it, but she loves it). When we venture over to Whole Foods, we get different kinds of fish (trout, salmon, tilipia, halibut, snapper). We also like beef, so we get beef from the butcher rather than from Costco. I usually drink Profect protein vials for breakfast and then eat a can of high protein pudding (I need it to mix in my huge dose of acidophilus so my antibiotics don't kill me). If I'm not eating shrimp for lunch, I'll have a cup of Dr. McDougall's soup -- split pea is my favorite, but I also like Mediterranian Pasta and Beans as well as their chili. It's easy to cook and has between 10-12 grams of protein. I buy it online, although Whole Foods carries a few of the flavors that I like. I haven't eaten any bread or things like tortilla as a post-op. They were binge foods for me as a pre-op, so I figure the best thing is to stay far, far away from them. I have no interest in fruit right now, that may change down the road. I wish I could eat eggs, but I'm highly allergic to them. I also take my vitamins every day, which I think is why my labs look good and I didn't have much hair shedding as a post-op. Kix

As another shrimp lover I thought I'd pass on a new quickie spicy shrimp recipe. I saute some onion, bell pepper, & celery (the frozen cut up kind) in a little oil with some garlic. Then I add a can of Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes (has to be this kind--they are the best). Let that heat through then add sriracha sauce (a spicy Thai chilie sauce you can get in most grocery stores) to taste--about a tablespoon plus for me--and a pound of devined and shelled shrimp. Just simmer until the shrimp are cooked. If you do rice or pasta, you can serve the shrimp over it. To fancy it up, add a bit of chopped parsley at the end (adds a nice fresh taste). And that's it. My grocery cart looks kinda bare most of the time. My husband and his family are big hunters so our freezer is filled with Venison, duck, quail and doves. We also have lots of freshwater fish like sandbass and crappie (my family are big fisherpeople, so am i for that matter). We also have two turkeys in there bought right after Thanksgiving on sale. So about once a month in the meat department at Sams, we get boneless skinless chicken thighs (I can only eat dark meat), boneless pork chops, usually a pork roast and sometimes some beef or pork ribs, and beef steaks. My weekly grocery cart looks like this: brown rice pasta (high in fiber and low in carbs - I can eat it but don't often) weight control oatmeal (for hubby - can't stand the stuff) Cheese Cheese and more cheese (I live off the stuff) 2% cottage cheese french onion dip baby carrots celery lunch meat diced tomatoes Rotel Canned mushrooms on a monthly basis - green, red, orange peppers, and other fresh veggies that can be frozen (i cut up and freeze) White onions bag of shrimp canned crab meat canned tuna chicken noodle soup soft silken tofu wheat tortilla wraps (for hubby - I can't them) Eggs Milk Splenda Koolaid Crystal Light or walmart brand Packets for water bottles. Cat food and litter (can't forget the little guys) I think thats it. Once every two months I order liquid concentrates from Protidiet or Profect or Nectar Protein powders.
