Christine, I hope you will look into all the available wls options, and esp the DS. It works well for anyone who qualifies for wls but esp for those with the most weight to lose, as it has the highest average percentage of excess weight loss of any wls. It also has the best maintainence of that weight loss - weight regain is a significant problem with RNY for some people.
It is possible to lose a great amount of weight with other operations, but your chances are best with the DS. It is also easier to live with - no dumping, no food getting stuck, you can drink liquids with meals, you can take NSAID's if you need them. There are no foods that you are never supposed to eat again. Overall, a much more normal quality of life.
Come on over to the DS forum and learn more about it! Whatever decision you make, it should be an informed decision. Best of luck to you.

Hi Christine,

My pre-op BMI was 54. I had surgery last march and my pre-op weight was 342 lbs. I am 10 months post-op and am down 135 lbs and still losing. My goal weight post-plastics is 140 lbs (approx 150 lbs pre-plastics), so that means a total loss of 202 lbs.

I feel my weight loss is on track and I will achieve my goal. I chose the DS because of my BMI, how much I had to lose and because of the statistics that demonstrated superior excess weight loss maintenance, KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF! I did not want to go through surgery only to gain the weight back. The malabsorption component of DS really aids in the maintenance.

If you aren't aware of DS I'd encourage you to research it so you have all the knowledge you need to make the best surgery choice for yourself.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I did the exact same math when I was preparig for WLS!  I chose the DS because I felt it would give me the best shot at getting to goal.  That being said, I had already accepted the fact that I may not get to goal, and I was okay with that too.  It is impossible to say for 100% sure that you will get to goal using any form of weight loss surgery.  I wish you the best on your journey!

70% may be an average-- whi*****ludes compliant and non-compliant people, unfortunately. You can have a great effect on your own percentages depending on how welleducated and compliant you are.

I had a higher BMI than yours, at 62. Today it's 26 and still falling. I had an RNY. I've lost 212 pounds to date.

By all means-- absolutely look into the DS...  but if you end up having to have an RNY (as I did) know that all is not lost, truly. The learning curve is steep, but it can all work out in the end.

It is a possibility that if you work your tool you will be able to get to goal.  Then comes the harder part of maintaing that weight loss with dieting.  If you are looking for other options that allow you to have restriction and malabsorption to lose and then keep the malabsorption to maintain check out the duodenal switch.  It has the best statistics of long term weight loss and you can also eat regularly for the rest of your life.  If this sounds like something you are interested in come to the DS forum here on OH and also check out dsfacts.com and duodenalswitch.com

And I get to eat anything and everything my heart desires. No diet here! =)

Minus 202 pounds; Height=5'10.5; Plastic Surgery = arms; Pant: 24 to 4/6; Top 3x to sm/med, I My DS! .
