Hello thereone: I understand that their are some people who believe that the DS is a better option than the RNY for persons who are heavier. Does anyone know why this is the case. I am trying to gather as much info as possible before my consult next week. So much information!!

This is my opinion on the subject.... Only you can make that decision. Just keep reading as much information as possible. Ask question on the DS board and Ask questions to someone who had RNY. People who had DS will say DS is the best and People who had RNY will say RNY is the best. When I first started researching, I would go to the DS board and like what they said so I would choose DS then the next day I would go to the main board and like what the RNY'ers were saying so I would change my mind. Thats when I realized that I had to make that decision on my own and with my surgeon. Good Luck, Kay

That's okay I read more than one person's story that they have to keep huge amounts of food to keep from losing too much weight. I joke that that is my dream position but let's face it. I am doing this to be healthy. At the same time I worry about ulcers etc which I read are less likely with the DS. It also sounds less evasive because you are actually using most of your own digestive system. I am also worried that I will forget, not chew my food properly and end up in the emergency room once a month. All questions for the consult I guess. Thanks for your response. Sally

To me DS does sound like a better option but my surgeon does not do DS so now I have to make the decision of just having the RNY or start over with finding another surgeon.

I may also have that problem. There are so few surgeon that do the DS. I did call one place and ask why and was told that it is a more complicated and more risky surgery to perform. I have to say that with what I am reading, that may be all from the surgeon's point of view because they can get through the surgery faster. The stomach is smaller but intact which has to be better....maybe?

One reason that the DS is considered a better option for the SMO patient is because the DS gives better long-term, MAINTAINED weight loss---76% at 10+ years post-op, as compared to 65-70% at 5 years for the RNY. Which is really GOOD---but the MAJOR reason *I* chose the DS was because of post-op lifestyle. I felt that the DS offered me the very best chance to live a completely NORMAL life, for 50+ years post-op. (I was 45 when I had my DS.) The DS also has a proven track record as the very BEST form of WLS where combating Type II diabetes is concerned. 98% of diabetics who've had the DS have acheived complete remission---and it presists to the 10+ year post-op mark.
