Marlena, When you don't get in your minimum of 60 grams of protein a day, you make your body use your muscle to get it. I've met WLS patients who have lost most of their muscle because they weren't getting adequate protein. Also, on the May 2005 Surgery support page, one of our members just got out of the hospital because she has had to be on a TPN line due to way low protein stores. She's hating life now. The doctor is telling her she has to get in over 100 grams of protein a day for a week before he will let her off the pic line. Seems pretty serious to me! I no longer use protein supplements, I can get it from the food I eat. I get 80 to 115 grams a day, pretty easily. One way that gets me off to a great start is that I eat 1 cup of fat free cottage cheese and that has 24 grams of protein. Good luck, please don't mess around with your nutrition! Lori 384/260.5/168

I don't take a protein supplement if I can avoid it. They can be convenient--especially for breakfast--but I get my protein through my food. I get a minimum of 70 grams (2 months out). I drink two glasses of skim milk in addition to having 2 to 3 oz. of protein for each meal. The lack of protein can create both short and long term health problems. Hair loss is worse with low protein. Protein is vital for muscle and organ function. If you cannot get your protein through food, sample various supplements; if you cannot stand the supplements, get your protein through your food. I'm sure you didn't go through wls to be sick and generally unhealthy. The webpage below does a good job of explaining protein deficencies. It is designed for vegetarians, but the problems are the same. http://www.netnutritionist.com/qa14.htm Sally

HEY MARLENA((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))) Girl...........some of those protein supplements taste like (to paraphrase the Grinch's theme song) "sauerkraut sandwiches with arsenic sauce" But I agree with with the other posters........you have to get it from somewhere. If you can eat cottage cheese, just like Lori said........its a great source of protein. And skim milk(mmmmmmmmmm..........my personal favorite!) Hope this helped( if it didnt..........HI ANYWAYS!!!!) take care willby
