I am worried
Iam going to have my surgery in June and am worried a bout my cats.I have never left them for more than a day and will be gone for almost a week.I would like to know how your cats reacted when you came home.I am single and the casts are like children to me.When I leav them for a day they will not have anything to do with me for a couple of days.

I could not resist replying to this post. It depends on the temperment of your cats. I used to have a russian grey, he was the most loving thing in the world. If we left home for a day or two, he would rub your skin off when you came home. We had a second story window with a hole in the screen. He would climb the tree and come into the house through the window. Once while we were gone, he had a party & invited all of his stray cat friends over to the house. When we returned, there were 3 cats in my house that I had never seen before. Seems we came home before they expected us & kinda crashed the party. LOL! Live and learn.
Now we have 2 Himalayans that are prima dona's. Now if we leave the house for any length of time, they tear the place up. We honestly have to have family to go over twice a day and pet the cats. Have you heard of anything like that in your life??
Congrats on your surgery date. This is going to sound crazy, but it works. I have a siamese cat and the first time I went away he peed on my bed. I was upset. My friend (whom has beagles) told me when I go away for more than a day to reassure my cat that I will be back. She said to tell him how many sunups and sundowns that I will be gone. (thats how cats tell time). I've been doing it ever since (about 8 years) and do not have any problems with the siamese or any of my other cats. My cats sensed that something was going on and was extra loving before and after the surgery. They also wanted to lay on my stomach (which I couldn't let them because I didn't want them to hurt me. Just reassure them that you will be back. They are like little kids. Cindy
Pamela,
I agree with Cindy. Talking to them, which we do, helps. They understand more than we think! Also if they are the nurturing type, like my two girls, then they will be extra careful with you and want to watch over you.
We are unable to leave our girls even overnight, so I know how you must be feeling. We make arrangements for someone to come over everyday to talk to them and feed them. In addition, even though they never actually "said" they like it. I leave the radio on, and if we are away even if they are having someone come it, I always call on the phone and talk into the answering machine. I know it sounds cuckoo!!!
But it seems to work for us.
Good Luck

My 3 babies all have different purrsonalities and all reacted differently. Belle, the eldest, likes to ignore me for the first hour when I come home from being away. Finnegan likes to plaster himself all over me, and Siobhan just disappears for 12 hours and eventually saunters over to be petted.
But when I came back from my RNY, I had complications that kept me in the hospital for almost 4 weeks. The cats kept me very close company. I always had at least 2 cats on the bed with me. All 3 showed they were concerned. It was amazing the difference. I guess they could smell "hospital" on me, and knew from their own experience that "hospital" is no great place to be, so were offering their support in the only way they could.
So, don't worry about your babies. Do get someone in though to talk to them and love them up while you're away, of course, but don't worry. They know when their Mommy isn't feeling well.
Cathy.

hi ,
i am new to this site and just happened to pop in and check out this message board but i thought that i would respond it this post because, i have several(5 cats) 3 of which are kittens that are not so small now,lol that we grew attached to lol. But I wanted to let you know that no matter how long you are gone for surgery i am sure your cats will be extremely caring when you come home. My 2 oldest cats are both "pet me when i want you to" cats. I have 2 children ages 7 and 3 and whenever either of them get a "hurt" whether it is a knee or feelings and cry. Both of our cats are the first ones there rubbing against them and making sure that the world is not going to end,
lol.
Just wanted to share that good luck and congrats on your surgery, happy losing lol.
God bless and Take Care,
Molly B

No need to be worried. I have nine cats, and when I came home after a week of being away, my kitties went a little crazy, running around. They were just so excited to see me! I had to sleep with a pillow on my belly, because I have a couple that like to sleep on it, but after 4 months now they are able to again. Good luck, and remember that your kitties will be fine. Like others said, talking to them (I really like the sunrise and sunset way of letting them know how long you will be gone) helps. And who said that calling them on the answering machine is cukoo?? I do it too!!!
