Inappropriate Elimination

I have a 1yo pure breed british shorthair who, as of Monday, has developed a nasty habit of pooping on my couch or, on my bed. She doesn't exhibit any signs of sickness (though I got an appointment for her for next Saturday - standard checkup and to talk about this if it doesn't improve). She is still affectionate. Recent changes in the household: * A week ago I went to Kansas City for 4 days for work. However I had a friend, with whom she is aquainted, come and visit for an hour each day that I was gone. * I went on a cleaning spree and washed all the blankets and comforters * I cleaned her litterbox. Two weeks previous my brand of crystal litter was unavailable, so I bought a different brand. I reverted back this past weekend. * I've been spending long hours on the PC getting a project done for school. I don't know what to do. I've cleaned the spots with an uphostery cleaner. I sprayed the couch with repellant this morning. I also closed the door to the bedroom so that she can't go in there. Anybody have any ideas? I don't like my baby being out-of-sorts. My previous cat of 16 years never did this. Thanks! - Sharon

Sharon, hopefully this problem is from too much change all at once, I understand where you are coming from, I once catsat a slighly blind cat who did this on my grass green velvet couch,I guess she thought it was the lawn? My one indoor cat is picky about the brand of litter I use,I better have the right kind or she will kick out and scratch in the box for an hour at a time.I hope that the vet can figure it out.Dar

I think a lot of it has to do with nerves. My vet told me that when they start peeing out of the litterbox, it's usually a sign of infection or rebellion. So hopefully Saturday you will find out that it's rebellion and nothings wrong. Spend a little extra time kissing up to your finicky one and she'll forgive you. Diana

Diana and Darlilly, Thanks for your suggestions. The doctor said there was nothing wrong with my baby but a bit of added attitude. She got over it withing 4 days. I got her a new litterbox and put it in the bathroom. She seems to prefer it to the other one. So... all is well for now! Thanks again. Sharon

My cat does the same thing... right next to the litter box... occasionally. I finally figured out she did not like the covered litter box, and only likes tidy cats with crystals. I also figured out she did not like my ex boyfriend once. While he was here, she dragged his wallet and put it in the litter box! I do have to say she was right! It is good to know that any affection she shows is genuine! No fooling around with that kitty!

That's the funniest thing ever!! Cats sure are a good judge of character. Boady now prefers a scoopable litter with Cedar in it. She had used chrystals prior to that. Now won't go near them. I finally removed the first litterbox and have had no further issues.
