Question about one of my baby's actions

Lately my cat (male - I've had him for almost 2 years) has been "talking" a LOT more than usual. He's also basically "refusing" to walk on the groud...if he's got a counter or table or something he can get around on he will.....he never used to be this way..... He never liked to be held before - and suddenly he will not leave me alone. If I don't hold him he really gets antsy. I have another baby (also male - had the same length of time) that hasn't changed at all......he's as sweet and loving as he's always been. Why would one change his actions and not the other? Any thoughts or inputs would be greatly appreciated. Dee Dee

Dee Dee, It could be any number of things -- maybe he's feeling like he's not getting enough attention from his favorite person? It could be breed driven. It could even just be hormones (is he fixed?). It could be that you're gone alot more now that it's summer and he misses you! Male cats -- particularly as they grow older -- tend to be VERY affectionate and love to be held and cuddled. Could be he's always been like this, but it just never manifested. Try doing this for a while: set aside some time each day that's just for YOU and HIM.. get his favorite toy and play with him -- give him a half hour or so.. maybe in the evening.. cuddle, scratch, play and love on him and just him for that period.. If that doesn't address the issue, contact your vet and give him an explanation of his behavioral change. Does he eat or drink differently? (more or less?) Have his litterbox habits changed? He may have a recommendation or want to see him. Better to be safe than sorry! Stef

Hi Dee Dee, Don't get worried -- have you changed something in the environment lately? --even something as simple as a change in the furnishings. Cats are VERY protective of their territory. If you make a change in your schedule --or even put down a new carpet your baby could get upset. And he will want much more attention from his mommy. If you haven't changed anything or made any changes in your schedule--then I would take him to see the vet. Sometimes cats try to tell you that something is wrong --but they rarely show that they are in pain--Has he started purring alot more lately??? Well believe it or not --purring can be a sign that they are in pain. And yes, I am a worry wort--I take my babies to the vet at the drop of a hat. That's what pet insurance is for! You have two young cats--so there is probably nothing more wrong than the fact that your boy would like to sow some wild oats!
