Topic: RE: The Big Flea Battle, or why cats should be kept indoors
I have found Zodiac's brand of flea repellent. Stinks to high heaven, but used the same way as Advantage at a fraction of the cost. I haven't seen or felt a flea since about 2 days after I put the stuff on them. I haven't bombed the apartment yet, but may do that this weekend, putting the cats in the garage. I've been using RAID, and it seems to be working. I'm also attempting to prevent the cats from going outside, but they love it so much they get pretty darned defiant.

The only trouble I've read about with Borax is that if the cats happen to get it on their feet and lick it off, it's poisonous, so you'd have to make really sure that you get all of it out of the carpets. Another form of Borax you can use is called "****roach chalk". You generally can find this stuff cheap in Chinese grocery stores. It looks exactly like blackboard chalk except it's got Borax mixed in, you draw lines around floorboards, in cupboards etc., and when the bugs cross the lines, they pick up the borax dust and it kills them eventually. I've tried this stuff in the past, and it actually works. Other remedies I've heard of include sprinkling moth crystals around the baseboards, leaving them for a while, then vaccuuming them up (supposedly the scent repels fleas and any other bugs) and using something called "diatomaceous earth". This last thing is a powder composed of the tiny microscopic fossilized skeletons of one-celled plants called "diatoms". It's non-poisonous to plants, pets and humans, but it works because these little skeletons act like tiny, sharp knives to insects, and basically they slice the shells of the insects to ribbons on contact. They are too tiny to do any harm to larger organisms, though. I've occasionally seen this stuff sold at garden centres for use in organic gardening, not sure how good it would be indoors. One other remedy I've heard of is "flea traps", these things are a light that attracts adult fleas, then when the fleas enter, they're stuck inside the device, sort of like a roach motel. Doesn't work on eggs and larvae, though.

Unfortunately the reason I have to keep buying Advantage, is because of the fleas that my landlord's ****reated) animals keep bringing into the house. Also, I live in the basement apartment, I can spray and treat my own space as much as I want, but as long as upstairs doesn't bother treating their part, the fleas will keep on coming back down here. Thankfully I'm moving out of here at the beginning of December. I'm planning on either spraying or putting mothballs in with everything I bring with me, just to avoid bringing fleas eggs/larvae etc along for the ride. Even if a few do make it along, I will continue to buy Advantage once a month, if and only if I find fleas on my cats again. If the month ends and no fleas, then no Advantage. The last time this happened to me (fleas coming in from a neighbouring home after the neighbours and their flea-ridden animals moved out) I only had to use Advantage for one month, the fleas never came back after that. Unfortunately this time the neighbour's animals keep bringing more back in.

Patti, Im not sure if you know but you dont have to keep purchasing Advantage for the rest of your cats lives. I have 2 cats and they are Indoor only. I asked my vet why I would have to keep buying (frontline for me) if it really killed the fleas. She said you didnt... after about 3 months just to make sure. She also mentioned that you need to be careful when you are around OTHER pets or people who have pets come over. Hope this was helpful!

Topic: RE: Fat Boy has Diabetes
Michelle, I know what you are going thur. I adopted a 10 year old diabetic male cat from the clinic that I worked at. He is now 13 years old. We go thur periods where his sugar does great and then we hit a bump in the road and have to adjust and then we do alright again for awhile. I love that old grumy man to death. I actually have a glucometer and a spiecal lansing device that I use to check his sugar routinely. When ALigar's sugar is getting too high I notice the same symptoms as you described and when it's getting too low I notice that he starts to drool and stumbles and seems delirous, but Aligar has always been a difficult case even when he lived at the hospital, most cats aren't as bad as he is. I also have 3 other cats and they get fed free choice. It takes sometime to get them used to their feeding schedule but it will happen. Good luck to you on your surgery and good luck to your kitty.

Topic: RE: Putting Belle to Sleep
Cathy, I am so sorry to hear that you had to put Belle to sleep. You did one of the kindest things we as pet owners can do. You ended her suffering and that is the kindest and most thoughtful gift you can give a beloved pet. I'm sure that Belle is in heaven with all kinds of cats having a great time. I know that I personally have three up there and have many friends who have cats up there too. God bless you for ending her suffering. It takes a tremendous amount of strength and courage to do it. Remember the good times. As I posted this evening, I thought my cat had Renal Failure and was lucky that it is diabetes. However if he was going to suffer I was ready to put him to sleep if that would end his suffering. God bless and take care. You did the right thing. ((((((((hugs)))))))) from a fellow cat lover and owner and WLS post-op patient.

Topic: Fat Boy has Diabetes
My name is Michelle and I am new to the board. I have two cats, Choobie who is 12 1/2 years old and 20# and Alyssa who is 4 years old and a slender 9#. The week before last, Choobie (fat boy) began drinking and peeing alot, losing weight and his coat looked messy. Right away I thought diabetes. He really got rough looking last weekend and unfortunately I had to attend a funeral and other get-togethers. Last Saturday night he was hiding in the closet and Alyssa was guarding him. Right away I thought he was dying and called ER vets. The woman was very nice and she said it sounded like Renal Failure and that he could wait until Monday to see a vet. Well I got on the computer and researched Renal Failure, and it is terminal and I became convinced that he was going to die. Whenever I could be with him I would lay with him and just cry. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and my child. I was so worried, I was sick about it. On Monday I called a clinic near home, since our vet in St Louis Park had retired, why go all that way when I had a pet hospital less than 5 minutes away? They couldn't get him in until Tuesday. The doctor examined him the best she could (he is awful with any vet because of many problems when he was younger). She then said that it could be a number of things, including renal failure and diabetes. He had to have a blood work up. They did that and his kidneys were fine, however his blood sugar was off the charts. They had to get a urine sample to determine definately that it was diabetes. So I left him overnight so they could get the sample and they were going to try to do a glucose level during the day on Wednesday. Well, he acted up and they were unable to get the glucose level. So he has been put on a low dose of insulin as well as prescription diabetes food. He is to be fed twice a day and if he doesn't eat at least half his food, he doesn't get any insulin because low blood sugar in the short run is more deadly than high blood sugar. He has been doing okay, though he is having a tough time with the feeding regimen. He has to be fed twice a day 12 hours apart and have insulin 1/2 hour after. So far he has only been actually eating enough food one time daily, though when he doesn't eat enough I give him a saline shot so that he is used to having 2 injections a day. He is already looking a lot better. I am also training my sister and two other friends to give him his insulin because sometime in November I will be having my stomach removed and we don't know how long I will be hospitalized in Rochester. Its all good, he is better...and the surgeon and GI at Mayo have figured out why I've been throwing up for 15 years after my VBG. For more details on that you can read my profile. Hopefully I will be eating and keeping down solid food by the end of the year. Michelle An extra tidbit: the vet hospital gives complimentary baths and nail clipping. Now Alyssa doesn't recognize his scent and is constantly hissing at him. Hopefully soon they will be buddies again. May all your cats give you love and happiness and may all your clothing have cat hair on it. LOL
