I have a 11 year old Maine Coon Cat (big cat). When he was young, I toilet trained him. I moved to my new home 3 years ago. I have the litterbox in the laundry/storage room now (the bathroom is too small). About a year ago, I put an old, metal bedpan in the room on the counter. It fell off (kitty playing). I left it for a few days. Then, before I was going to pick it up, I noticed that it had been "used". Aly prefers it to the litter box (I have 2 other cats who use it). I guess his training was good. Aren't cats smart. Aly knew the shape of the bedpan, and knew what it was for.

Barbara,
First, please accept my deepest condolences. I lost my Tabitha on the 5th. She was a wonderer and there was just no way to keep her in all the time. If I tried she thought she was being punished. She wondered in here about 10 years ago. She was quite savvy, but apparently wa**** by a car. It breaks my heart, so I can sympathize with you, please please believe me....it takes alot more love to end a baby's suffering than to keep it here with us. I have been in that situation also. Just the fact that you loved Ms. Lilli enough to do that speaks volumes.
I hope you find comfort in knowing that she is happier now.

Thank you Darlilly. It's so funny that you mentioned she tried to stay with me as long as possible. Our last morning together, after hiding for a week as sick cats do, she came out of hiding, laid next to me purring and licking me. It was as if she was saying she loved me and knew I had done what I could. OK, now I'm crying again...............

Just wanted to share with those who understand, this morning at 10:00 a.m., I had to have my baby put to sleep. She had an enlarged heart, failing kidneys and major digestive problems. She stopped having bowel movements 7 days ago, stopped eating 6 days ago, and had produced no urine for 5. The vet said any more treatment would be inhumane. The staff at the Broward County Humane Society were so compassionate and understanding. She went peacefully and I know she's in a better place. Unfortunately, after 5 months of not desiring food, I now want to order an extra large pizza with everything on it. Thanks for listening. Barbara

hello! I am jealous. I would love to have a big ole barn with lots of kitties. I would take them all in if I could.

Pamela,
I agree with Cindy. Talking to them, which we do, helps. They understand more than we think! Also if they are the nurturing type, like my two girls, then they will be extra careful with you and want to watch over you.
We are unable to leave our girls even overnight, so I know how you must be feeling. We make arrangements for someone to come over everyday to talk to them and feed them. In addition, even though they never actually "said" they like it. I leave the radio on, and if we are away even if they are having someone come it, I always call on the phone and talk into the answering machine. I know it sounds cuckoo!!!
But it seems to work for us.
Good Luck

Congrats on your surgery date. This is going to sound crazy, but it works. I have a siamese cat and the first time I went away he peed on my bed. I was upset. My friend (whom has beagles) told me when I go away for more than a day to reassure my cat that I will be back. She said to tell him how many sunups and sundowns that I will be gone. (thats how cats tell time). I've been doing it ever since (about 8 years) and do not have any problems with the siamese or any of my other cats. My cats sensed that something was going on and was extra loving before and after the surgery. They also wanted to lay on my stomach (which I couldn't let them because I didn't want them to hurt me. Just reassure them that you will be back. They are like little kids. Cindy
