IHelp...s there a new standard for CC length?
Hi. Is there a new statndard for the length of the DS common channel? I contacted a doctors that makes his 75 cm to 100cm. I thought the cc was to be 65cm. What do y'all think? Maybe a 100cm will be better for me but whatif I don't loose enough weight or get preggers 2 years out and blow up like a balloon????? Help so I can pick a doctor. Thanks
As far as I know the standard is 100cc.
Some will do a 75cc but there can be more stomach issues the shorter the cc so you really have to commit to wanting it.
A 65cc sounds awfully short. The stomach issues that come with that would have be be seriously considered.

My surgeon's standard cc length is 100cm. He says it has a "proven" success record and sticks close to it for everyone. There are other opinions about how to establish the "correct" cc length; as you said it varies with each surgeon. --Gina

Each surgeon has his/her own standard.
My surgeon uses 100 cm (about 40 inches) for the common channel, the standard for all his patients. He believes that a shorter cc can result in malnutrition (maybe more vitamin deficiency?). He does not use the Hess method to determine the proper cc (I asked).

I just went to Dr. Anthone's mandatory seminar/class & the first question I asked him was what was the length of the common channels that he does. I found his answer extremely interesting. He's been doing this for so long & keeping data. He made the point that with the DS, tall males lose big time pretty much whatever the common channel length is. The people who seem to have the most difficulty losing the most weight are (which is what I am, of course), very short females. In each DS that Dr. Anthone does, he actually measures the entire intestine. He takes that measurement & adds other factors like what co-morbidities the patient has, family history, etc. & comes up with the best common channel length specific to that patient's intestine length & other patient specifics. I'm very comfortable with that. Of course, when I have my consult with him, I'm going to tell him I think my common channel shouldn't be any longer than 50cm's. We'll see what he says.

In other words, even all of the exact right supplementation may not be enough to hold a shorter CC healthy.
I'm following the shorter than 100cm (what I have) with interest. I KNOW we can fix 100 cm (if it's not too late), but am having trouble with 50's.

Thanks for that input, VitaLady. Dr. Anthone did mention several times about going in & changing the channel length when people couldn't stop losing. You're right, he's been doing these since 1992. My consult is on July 30th, I'll let you know what he says about my 50cm idea :-}

My surgeon favors 150. That is what I have -- and I have had no issues. I have lost weight and have no bowel issues. You can look at the lab rat data to compare common channel length with weight loss. I think you will see that some folks with long common channels lost just as well as the folks with the shorter common channels. The trick is to find a surgeon you trust and then -- trust his/her judgement. http://www.epursimuove.com/ds/

Oh, by the way, to my knowledge there has never been a "standard" for common channel length. Dr. Hess figured CC based on percentages and then from there different surgeons have different ways of determining the length.
There is no standard. I have a 50cm common channel. I have technically not lost all my excess weight even though I have gotten to my goal. There are people out there with a 200cm channel that are below goal. Some doctors use the Hess method where your common channel is based on the length of your entire small intestine (like mine). Others have a standard size that they use. Neither is right or wrong. Everyone reacts differently and you can never, EVER predict what's going to happen.
Why is everyone so worried about common channels now? I mean, this is honestly a part that we should leave up to our surgeon. We should not be dictating this part of the surgery to them. It's all well and good to be informed and insist on certain things, but I'm of the mindset that this is NOT one of them. Pick a surgeon with a good record and good ethics. That's the best you can do for yourself.
