Jello and Gatorade: Which Colours Are Okay?

I'm making my list and about to head to the store and I know that I can't have the red, but why would blue or purple coloured drinks/jello be okay? Isn't the dye equally bad for surgery? I wish we had a pre-op thread.

The red, and sometimes orange, can appear to look like blood.  That is why when going in for a colonoscopy or surgery it is recommended that you steer clear of them.

jULIE, is that true also for jello?. I got a big carton of sugar free jello with red, raspberry, which might not be good, and orange. So should I stay clear of all of them preop and a few days postop?

It would be true for anything with red dye in it.  You really need to ask your surgeon whether it is something that he requires you to stay away from preop.  I did not have a preop diet, so this was not an issue for me.  I was specifically instructed not to eat or drink anything with red or orange dye in it before having my colonoscopy.  Check with your surgeon's office to know for sure.

Thanx Julie. I do not have a preop diet, just full liquids 2 days before surgery, and clear liquids day before surgery.

Thank you so much!! I was wondering what the hell to do. They said to not consume the red jello and ices, but I didn't know about the gatorade. Thank you!

Red-, purple-, and orange-colored jellos, drinks, and other foods are not recommended for pre-ops in the days before surgery because surgeons can mistake those colors for blood during surgery and may do unnecessary repairs.  Same with colonscopies and other bowel procedures.

As a post-op, any color would be acceptable.  So go for the red, purple, and orange!

That is interesting to know. I did know about red, but not about orange. So I guess I will eat that jello now preop and after leak test postop maybe?
