'DOH--goat cheese!

So I've been a little, mmm, bored and frustrated with being able to eat only eggs and fish with any confidence. This lactose intolerance stuff just bites!

Then yesterday I was at a friend's, and she had just picked up some goat cheese. I looked at it, and the lightbulb went off--LACTOSE INTOLERANT PEOPLE CAN EAT GOAT CHEESE, 'cause there's no lactose in it!!!

So I had some at my friend's, and I went to Trader Joe's and got some goat gouda and goat cheddar. I am so happy! I ate cheese nearly every day, pre-op.

Just wanted to share with anyone else who forgot you can eat goat cheeses even if you're really lactose intolerant.

OMG!!!!! I didn't know that!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I will be going tomorrow to get some!!!  OMG!!!

How does it taste?  Does it tastes the same? (Gouda and Cheddar)  Do you have the "image" problem that I do about it being GOAT?

I sure will give this a try, because I'm missing cheese almost as much as I'm missing bread!

Thank you SO much for this post!!!!!!!!!!

(Sorry for the over use of "!!!!!!!!!!" I'm just so excited I could squeal!)

Really, the taste depends on what breed of goat the milk came from. There are some that the milk tastes almost identical to cow milk, so the cheese tastes really close. I find it is pretty hit or miss. If you have a Whole Foods near, check out their cheese section. You can often get samples.

Is there one you could put on pizza that would mimic mozzarrella?

Goat cheese can have a definite tang, but I kinda like that in a cheese. In a milk, probably not so much, though I haven't tried milk because I don't drink regular milk, even pre-op.

I got some goat brie, too, and that was just dynamite. It was pretty creamy. NOM!

It probably pays to sample a lot of stuff to find out what suits your palate. Farmer's markets can be a good place to look and sample. If it's a bigger market, you might find several vendors, and I'll bet their cheese all tastes different.

The goat part doesn't bother me, mostly because I just DON"T CARE, as long as I can eat cheese! I think you can relate.

Let me know what you find out.

My daughter had some lactose intolerance problems as an infant and we found that goat's milk worked well too.  Tastes pretty good too, only a little expensive.

I was very lactose intolerant as a child and my parents got goats because goats milk was so hard to come by. It worked great for me.

I like to cut up some goat cheese, thrown some bruschetta sauce (can be in jar) on it. Bake it in the 375 degree oven for about 6 minutes and then dip any kind of cracker or pita chip I have in the house in it. Kind of like a tapas. YUMM!
