Odor, mythbusters please

Okay, I have seen it denied a hundred times here. I just  saw, on another board, someone saying they actually knew someone who had DS and had a definite "odor" and that she couldn't stand near her sometimes. I am NOT trying to start a war here.

What I am, is trying to find out what this is about. Is there an odor, or isn't there? Is there a possibility of an odor? Is there a rare odor side effect that .00000000001 % of DS'rs could aquire? I just want to know what to be prepared for, what type of odor we are talking here. And I can't even imagine what the cause would be....wracking my brain.....not coming up with anything at all!

Here's an EXCELLENT thread with a ton of responses so you can formulate your own conclusion from this...  Hope it helps!

Every opinion we share, every favor we perform, every moment we intently listen to someone talk about themselves is our opportunity to pass along something positive to a person who needs us.

How funny, I was just reading that. Silly people. Maybe her friend has odors because she doesn't wipe her ass.
Won against big bad (SoCal) Kaiser for a Duodenal Switch  Haven't heard of DS? Kaiser wants it that way. Come on over & read the truth
Hit goal (Normal BMI) on 2-10-11!    I LOVE my DS!!
My approval process timeline:
02/12/09 - Dr. refused to refer me for WLS
03/03/09 - Vented/whined about it on another board, planned to just wait until next year & switch plans
Let's see what happens!  **updates in blog**

LOL! There should be a warning: The DS will not wipe your ass for you!

Perhaps she is making this up.  Perhaps the alleged offender had a general hygiene problem unrelated to her DS - like maybe she didn't shower regularly...

I've met in excess of 50 DSers in real life all across the country and not a single one of them had an odor.  Not one.

I agree with Sandy.  Let's look at the flip side of the coin, here.  There are lots of normies who have an odor.

Don't freak out. I've spent most of the last 2 weeks at graduation parties, BD parties (including my own), etc. Lots of time with lots of family and friends in close quarters. I have over 50 nieces and nephews, not to mention, 5 sisters and brothers, all of their friends, etc. Believe me if there was a smell there's not a one of this group that would hesitate to tell me. I have even asked people if I smell different because I've heard that same BS before and so far they all say I smell just fine to them and none of them have had WLS. So, relax! As long as you eat right and take care of yourself you should be just fine!!!!

Thanks for posting this question because right after I read the response to my inquiry on the RNY board I was heading straight here to get the insider info! It does seem realy strange that any WLS would cause an offensive odor - I know that when my friend first had her RNY her breath was so severely overpowering I had to step back - it seems to have resolved itself - as we all know (or most people who have lived dieting on and off their entire life) that ketosis can cause some nasty smelling breath - maybe that's what the woman smelled on her friend? Anyway - glad to have the myth busted here!

The more I read, the more I am leaning toward DS - it really does seem like a better option for me.....

HIJACK: Somers, CT? Wow - I grew up in Stafford right on the Somers line on route 190!

But anyway, that has nothing to do with anything here...

Oh, and I don't stink, and none of the many DSers I've met in person had a stink about them, either. If it is a possibility, it must only happen once in a blue moon, and even then, I would tend to believe it is for a different reason but just ends up getting blamed on the surgery as a convenient excuse.
