Whataburger Now Offers Smaller, Whole Wheat Buns

O.K., first of all, I know generally:  bun = bad idea, due to their carb content.

Butttt, if you just HAVE to have a bun on your burger, at least one fastfood place is now willing to offer an optional wheat one, which should at least help cut down on the "gas effect".     The bun is also slightly smaller than their standard big white bun, which should save a few cals.  The wheat bun appears to be the same type that WB has always used with its chicken sandwiches, for diners familiar with those.

At least it's a start in the right direction for burger joints   ..

Speaking of buns Paul, I was at the grocery earlier this evening and saw these very thin buns to use. They had whole grain and maybe another kind, but I didn't buy it yet. I am considering it. It was like 13 grams of carbs maybe. I wonder if it would hold a burger?

MIght do the job, KR.

I was just reading a psychological study (believe it or not) that apparently WB had some experts conduct regarding their smaller (white) buns on their regular burgers.   The scientists found that reported "satiety" was increased 18% for diners who ate a burger made with the smaller bun vs. those made with the bigger bun.   The researchers attributed the difference to the psychological effects of eating a burger in which the meat patty stretched out past the edges of the bun vs. one that didn't.

The Orowheat "Thinwhiches?"

I like them. I don't eat them everyday.

I would strongly encourage newer post-ops to wait before introducing breads, etc. into their diet. They take up LOTS of precious real estate in your tummy and offer little in actual DS nutritional reward. (just my $.02)

So true Steph, they are something I would not eat regularly or even once a week, but for that special occasion when I don't want just a plain burger. I have also gone to Jack N the Box and gotten one of their bacon cheeseburger without the bun, and they put it in a box, no questions asked. I did go to Micky D's last week and got the mushroom/swiss burger w/o the bun and they put it in the salad box, so it really does work to ask for whatever w/o the bun.

Unless you are in Kuwait. They just can't wrap their head around not putting a bun on it.

Karen I have gotten the Arnold Multigrain and I love them.  When I buy a package I freeze each "side" of the bun in a little baggie.  Then I can get half a bun at a time without wasting the other half.  I do not eat them often but they do keep well in the freezer.

Yes, that looks like them REd. I did not remember the name Arnold, but looks like the item. Thanx.  But, I think even if you ate both sides, wasn't it about 13 grams of carbs, and to me, I could still do that and keep it below 50 if I so wanted it.

I think the carb count is a little higher than that - but not much.  I have just found that half a bun is enough for me and I get to save the carbs for something else yummy.

... while *I*, on the other hand, discovered that McDonalds will serve their mushroom swiss angus burger "without the bun" in a cute little container with a knife & fork -- all the flavor and NO carbs from a bun!

They didn't blink an eye when I ordered it without the bun, but I didn't expect it to come in a little salad container -- I figured they'd throw it in the same ol' cardboard box.
