Could this have been a bowel obstruction? Also low blood sugar questions

Hello everyone.  I wondered if anyone has experienced something like this.

On New Year's Day we had some of the foods that are usually eaten on that day.  I had some black eyed peas, a bite or two of corn bread, some spinach with an egg cooked into it, also some turnip greens fixed the same way and maybe some other stuff as well.  Later that evening I had a glass of milk with some Hershey's kisses.  I have had all of these things before except the spinach and turnip greens.  I have had milk before and it almost seems like I am getting a bit of lactose intolerant.  I can drink a little with no problems but if I drink more than a glass in a day it bothers me some.  So, I think maybe the milk or the turnip greens may have caused it (leaning more towards the turnip greens).  Here's what happened: around 11 that night my stomach started bothering me.  I felt bloated.  It kept getting worse by the minute.  I started having a lot of pain and thought that it was just a lot of gas and if I could pass it I would feel better.  I pooped but still didn't feel any better.  It continued to get worse.  I was hurting really bad.  I couldn't bend or move without pain.  It put too much pressure on my belly.  I could hardly move because I was in so much pain.  I had sharp pains in my sides and even going through my left breast (I know that was kinda strange).  My arms got shaky and my chin started quivering too (I think it was because I was hurting so much).  My belly up to my rib cage was hard too.
I came to my computer, where my DH was, and pulled up my info on obstructions because I thought I might have to go to the ER.  This went on for about an hour (I know I shouldn't have waited that long).  I had already got dressed and ready to go to the ER and decided that if I didn't feel any better after I tried to poop again that I would go.  Well, I finally was able to go and I had a lot of gas and diarrhea.  I was up and down most of the night with if after that.  I haven't had any problems since.  So I wanted to see if you think it may have been an obstruction that worked itself out or if the greens caused it or what??

The other problem I've been having is with my blood sugar.  It seems to be low all the time now.  It was 58 the other day.  It was 60 around noon today.  I know one of my problems is that I wait too long before eating.  Sometimes it's 1 PM before I eat.  I know that's bad and I'm working on that.  I didn't realize I was having this problem and now that I know I'm trying to eat small meals or snacks through out the day.  What I wanted to know is if I start eating the right way will it take care of the problem or am I going to have to break down and go to the doc. about it?  I mean, does anyone have a problem with low blood sugar since they've had their DS to where eating properly isn't taking care of it?  If so what have you had to do to fix it?

I meant to get to the computer earlier so that I wouldn't have to post and run but it just didn't work out.  So please forgive me for doing a post and run but it's almost time for me to watch Alabama kick Texas' booty in the Championship game. Teethy  I'll check back later.

Thanks so much!

I get those gas episodes every once in a while. It is not an obstruction-just an intolerance to something you ate. Try the elimination thing where you try eliminating one thing from your diet at a time and see if that helps prevent this to figure out what the culprit is. Most likely the milk/sugar combo of the kisses and milk. I cannot do dairy any more other than cheese. I only use lactose free milk now, and that very sparingly. Can't help with the low blood sugar other than to say eat proteins frequently. I graze constantly or I start to feel funky. Never could do the 3 meals thing with only one or two snacks. I eat whenever I feel the need.

I had a bad episode after having a small bit of black eyed peas. NEVER AGAIN.

As for your glucose, well...those are low numbers. Might want that checked or self monitor after having a snack to see if they come up. I used to fast 250+ and haven't seen higher than a 105 since being home. Today I had a 95 and that was not long after a double protein shake.

I'm glad you brought that up.  I do in fact have a protien shake every morning about 2 hours after I wake up with my second batch of vitamins.  I was wondering if the shake should keep or help my glucose not to get that low.  It has about 6 carbs, 3 sugars and 30 grams of protein.  So even if I don't have actual food until around noon on some days I do have the protein drink.  And right when I wake up I always either have light cranberry juice watered down or orange juice with my iron.  The day I had a reading of 58 I'm sure it was after having the juice and protein shake.  I'm not sure how long after though.   Probably at least 2 hours.  You scared me enough though.  I'm going to the doc. 1st chance I get.  Thanks

ETA:  Oops, sorry I thought you were asking me.  But I am glad you brought it up because I meant to mention in my original post that I have a shake & about a half a cup of juice every morning even though I may not eat until late.

I didn't check before the shake. I was hoping to get a report from my 3 mon labs to see what my A1C was, but the office explained they don't contact us unless we have abnormal labs. Sooo, its up to me I guess to start poking myself again, except now to make sure Im not getting too low.

If it aint one thing, its another huh?

ANY NUMBER BELOW 60 IS DANGEROUS, YOU ARE DEPRIVING YOUR BRIAN OF OF GLUCOSE THAT IT NEEDS TO FUNCTION TO LIVE, AROUND 30 OR LESS YOU CAN GO INTO COMA, IT CAN GO DOWN VERY QUICKLY,  GET A METER, AND SEE A DOCTOR AND WORK THIS OUT.
THREE TIMES A WEEK I GET CALLED OUT TO RESCUE SOMEONE AS A EMT FOR THIS,,, A FEW TIMES A YEAR THEY JUST DON'T MAKE IT.

Having had a bowel obstruction I will say it doesnt sound like you experienced the same things I did...the pain was constant and did not go away even after going to the restroom!  It was worse than child labor IMO.  The pain from a bowel obstruction begins in the lower abdomen and constant...doesnt go away at all.

Bowel Obstruction - Symptoms

The symptoms of a bowel obstruction depend on whether the blockage is in the small intestine (small-bowel obstruction) or the large intestine (large-bowel obstruction).

Small-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Most small-bowel obstructions cause waves of cramping abdominal pain. The pain occurs around the belly button (periumbilical area). If an obstruction goes on for a while, the pain may decrease because the bowel stops contracting. Continuous severe pain in one area can mean that the blockage has cut off the bowel's blood supply. This is a medical emergency. Call your doctor immediately.
  • Vomiting. Small-bowel obstructions usually cause vomiting. The vomit is usually green if the obstruction is in the upper small intestine and brown if it is in the lower small intestine.
  • Elimination problems. Constipation and inability to pass gas are common signs of a bowel obstruction. But when the bowel is partially blocked, you may have diarrhea and pass some gas. If you have a complete obstruction, you may have a bowel movement if there is stool below the obstruction.
  • Bloating. Blockages may cause bloating in the lower abdomen. You may also hear gurgling sounds coming from your belly. With a complete obstruction, your doctor may hear high-pitched sounds when listening with a stethoscope. The sounds decrease as movement of the bowel slows.

Large-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Blockage of the large intestine usually causes abdominal pain below the belly button. The pain may vary in intensity. Severe, constant pain may mean that your intestine's blood supply has been cut off or that you have a hole in your intestine. This is a medical emergency. Call your doctor immediately.
  • Bloating. Generalized abdominal bloating usually occurs around the belly button and in the pelvic area.
  • Diarrhea or constipation. Either of these symptoms may occur, depending on how complete the obstruction is. Your stools may be thin.
  • Vomiting. This symptom is not common with a large-bowel (colonic) obstruction. If vomiting occurs, it usually happens late in the illness.

Blockages caused by cancer may cause symptoms such as blood in the stool, weakness, weight loss, and lack of appetite.

Bowel obstructions in newborns

Key signs of obstruction in newborns are green vomit and failure to pass the first stool, which is made of a thick, greenish black substance called meconium.

Several other conditions can cause similar symptoms

I realize you did also research these but I just dont think they get posted often enough for everyone to keep them in mind.

Hi Colene,

The pain I had was constant.  It just kept getting worse the whole time and at a fast rate.  It did feel like I was in labor.  I actually described it that way when I was telling my mom about it.   But I do think now that it was something I ate that caused it.  I don't think I will ever eat greens again!
Thanks for posting that again.  I tried to put something about it in my post but I couldn't get it to paste right.

Im sorry you experienced any type of tummy discomfort at all!  The type of constant pain I had went on for 13 days!  I had been misdiagnosed as having been constipated!  I couldnt even walk unassisted!  It was truelly horrible not to mention scary!  It started Christmas eve after cooking dinner...I had eaten a very small bite of fudge (dime size) and am very sugar intollerant, then I served my plate along with everyone else when the pain began.  It hit so fast that I really didnt think much of it other than the fudge!  I thought...darn fudge is gonna kill me!!! lol   I wrapped up my plate and put it in the refridgerator and went to my bf for a few hours with his mom.  Once we got there I really didnt feel well and told him I was going to go lay down for a little bit and see if the pain would go away on its own as it had done if I had eaten other things that didnt settle well.  The next thing I knew my boyfriend was standing over me shaking me asking if I was okay...I opened my eyes and his mom, my son and him were all very scared looking asking me if I was okay because I had slept for 6 hours and was sobbing in my sleep.  Not to mention the sweat was dripping off me.  I told him that I didnt think things were okay and felt that I needed to get to the ER immediately.  Without hesitation they took me in and the ER doc not being familiar with my anatomy misdiagnosed me.  I spent 13 days total in ICU, 4 of which were following a surgical repair.  I really dont have much memory of the days beyond the first 3 as I was on a morphene drip and thats all I know of that!  Though through stories that my sister and parents as well as my bf, have told me I was reallly ill.  Definately its worth the time and money to go have things checked out!  I have heard of some having partial blockages that the pains disappear early out then reappear full force!  Better safe than sick!
