Definitely increased for me.   I'd like to stress being sure you have a psychiatrist manage your meds post op.  PCP's etc. don't have a great grasp of what is needed and how to manage psych meds.

My meds had to be increased after my DS. Just stay on top of it, keep an eye out for signs. Stay close to your Dr. if meds need to be tweeked

I had a pretty yucky time of it from 3 - 9 mos. out, with the worst being between 6 - 8 mos. out. It definitely helped to get meds tweaked. Also, I think that you can get protein deficient quickly in the fast weight loss phase, and one of the symptoms of protein deficiency can be depression. It shows up that way in me.

I think having at least one shake a day, on top of the 90 g of protein you get from food, is one way to stave off protein deficiency issues during that time.

I am about a month pre-op. I have general depression and have been getting worse the last 5-6 months so the last 2 visits to my psychiatrist she has been increasing my dosage. She also said that after the surgery I would feel effects of the lack of the carbs I am used to eating that affect the dopamine receptors. She said it has nothing to do with physical hunger but could worsen a depression.

Also, Dr Husted didnt want me to take any anti-depressant meds for 2 days after the surgery either for healing purposes which also concerned me because I have a very bad time if I even miss a pill. I am on 3 doses of 100 mg of Effexor a day. Due to this she gave me a time released version of Effexor which she wanted me to take for 3 days before the surgery as the effects would last the 2 days.

So those are two things right there to beware of if you are depressed and on medication and then have a DS and resulting change of diet.

I just want to jump in with this obvious piece of information, which I'm sure most of you already know, but hasn't been mentioned in this thread.

Timed- and extended-release formulations often don't work for DSers.  Your guts are shortened, and the pills could end up in your colon long before the full dosage is released.

Thanks for adding this. I dont know of any NON time released anti depressants ill have to talk with my therapist about it.

well... as a 5 week post op and someone who has dealt with a LOT of depression issues in life. I can say I was great for a whole year pre op and post op I was fine until yesterday.... now it'****ting me. I sat and cried yesterday and felt defeated...I know that sign. It's because I feel so sick all the time and cant keep anything down easily except my ultra greasy morning omelette....then the shakes I drink all day to get my protein keep my stomach upset all day and I just basically go in cirlcles being sick.......I think if you have complications or feel TERRIBLE your more likely to hit that depression thing. *sigh*  I see a doctor Monday to see if we can fix my nausea and stuff PRAYING I wont have to worry about teh depression thing. what a battle.
