To Shannon -hiding behind a block
I always hope to give a person the benefit of the doubt until I can see otherwise. If she would just post her labs, it would take a lot of speculation out of the equation and she would get the help/advice that may help her or guide her to something that works best for her-if she needs it at all. Now we'll never know...and worse, neither will she.
She actually wrote a reasoned and impressive reply to me in the thread... only I had to log out to read it. (What is the point of the "reply and block"?) What I would have told her is that I understand how difficult a paradigm shift it is to not listen to your caregivers advice as gospel, however it's an important psychological place to be at when you decide to get the DS surgery, and much more dangerous to not be at that point when you are post op. I would have also said that since she's been here on the board for quite a long time, that she should have inferred that critical thinking and personal responsibility trumped the Doctor's advice every time, since the patient is the one that has to LIVE WITH whatever decision is made... The Doctor's malpractice insurance will take care of it on his end. So he has no motivation to deviate from the SOC.
I'm with ya on the whole psychological thing and the paradigm shift stuff. It's a lot for all of us to have researched and got the whole DS thing. It's a lot of living like everyone in the "medical community" (and a LOT of what baratric medicine oddly enough) tells us exactly not to.
But here's the damn kicker for me. If I tell someone on this forum you can have the DS and eat bacon till it comes outta your ears, well hell...they take me at my word! If I say, I've had this surgery and I NEED more fat, why by all means, they can't wait to eat high on the hog and then LAUGH in the faces of those who tell them to cut back on red meat and animal fats, because *I* have the DS by golly!
If someone says on this forum that in order to break a stall, you'll need to consume a donut, people can't get in their freaking car fast enough to gobble one down....
But....whoooaaa hold up....those vitamins, well those are just expensive and hard to keep up with. And really, I mean, that's kinda ridiculous isn't it? We don't really need THAT many right? I think to be on the safe side, I'll ask my NUT!!! (I won't mention how much other **** I do that only my DS has allowed me but this is important)
Oh and those shakes are just yuck, I am sure that I am getting in enough protein without bothering, because 150-200g protein, that's a bit overboard! I am sure I can find someone who'll agree with me and who cares if it takes asking 100 till I can one yes.
This wasn't part of the original deal to pick and choose my favorite parts of my DS.

Evidently I have arrived because I've been blocked!!!
I too hope that she does well, despite what I see as a willingness to deviate from what experienced experts who have lived with the DS have advised her to do. If she is on the VitaLady plan, I hope she decides to stay on it rather than risk having her labs tank.
If however, she finds herself with some problems in the future, I hope she will be wise enough to own up to it and seek help from many of those she has blocked.
Shannon, assuming you are still reading the posts of those you have blocked - I understand why people reacted to you like they did. From your prior posts, it seems like you have essentially asked to be convinced to own your own health a number of times but have been willing to let money or others stand in the way. I know it can be frustrating even for me to see these and I'm still a baby DSer.
There are no guarantees - you may do fine with minimal supplementation but why risk it?
I know the responses you have gotten have not been sugar coated but sometimes we need to hear the harsh truth to shake us of our illusions. I get that you want to believe what a dietitian says but this is one of those cases where unless you live it, you may not fully appreciate the DS post-op life.
Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, or in this case block well versed vets and potential assets just because your feelings got hurt.
Good luck.
Kim
