Heartburn after DS?

I used to have pretty massive heartburn. I have up meat and any fried foods and very very rarely have it now. I have only taken one antacid all year. (knock on wood) How is heartburn after DS? With the RNY, my doc said it would be cured. That's really the only reason I am still leaning toward RNY. I don't know yet if DS is an option for me, but I am starting to look into it.

Thanks in advance.
Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f*ckin' perfect.

I have suffered with GERD for over 20 years.  The DS did not cure it but I only take 1/2 of the medicine I used to take.

I have seen posters on the main board that had RNY surgery complain of heartburn and GERD.

I don't have any studies on this but maybe someone will chime in with some.

I have heard that the DS makes heartburn better in some, worse in some.

With the DS, heartburn could easily go either way (improve or get worse), or stay the same.  My heartburn is worse post-DS, but well-controlled with daily omeprazole now.
Is heartburn your worst obesity problem?  If so, that would be one of the extremely rare times I could think a RNY would be okay.  But for practically every other issue, the DS is much better (diabetes, etc.)

I had GERD pre--op (DS)  and it did not improve with the DS.  But I take prilosec every day and like magic, poof , no heartburn.

Heartburn is NOT a reason to chooose the RNY.

I had severe GERD/heartburn before DS.

now I did have a period of about 4 to 5 months of bad ulcer like stomach pain while my tummy was healing

However I almost NEVER have heartburn anymore now, it is very very rare for me now

I didn't suffer from heartburn often pre DS, maybe once every few months or something. Post DS, I haven't had it a single time, and it's been 9 months.

Before my DS, I had really bad heartburn. I had to take medication daily.  Now, almost 3 years later, I might have it once every 3-4 months if I eat something like Spaghetti or Pizza....things one would expect to cause heartburn.  Remember, with DS, you still have a working stomach.  I wouldn't let it be the deciding factor in RNY vs DS.  Do all your homework then decide what is best for you.

I had pretty frequent, nasty heartburn pre-op. I've not had ANY heartburn since my DS, but it's important to note that back when I had my DS, the trend was toward making larger sleeves than they make these days. I've also noticed that with the smaller sleeves has come a greatly increased incidence of strictures. 7+ years ago, we just NEVER heard of a DSer's stomach becoming strictured, and nowadays---I wouldn't say it's "common" but it's certainly not as rare as it once was.

Hi Amber,
In "5" years (next month), I can honestly say I have NOT had any heartburn.  I eat spicy food such as Mexican (authentic as well as my own version which is pretty doggone spicy).  I make spaghetti sauces, taco sauces and I eat ketchup and tomatoes, onions and salsas (all of which use to give me heartburn PRE-OP.  I mean to tell ya, girl...the DS is such a wonderful way of living...and like I have told a few other pre-ops, it is a WLS that just keeps on GIVING.  I was 53 when I had my surgery and will be 59 in a few months.  I feel so much better than I did even in my 30's.  Good luck on your search for JUST THE RIGHT WLS FOR YOU...pssssst....the DS is wonderful...or did I already say that

ETA an "f" in wonderful...OH YEAH...did I mention that having the DS is WONDERFUL

I've had HORRIBLE heartburn since surgery, had it a little before, but now its like the devil. I've been on several heartburn meds and thru a combo it is tolerable now- but nowhere completely gone. HTH, good luck!
