Vitamins?

Well I have been doing alot of research, reading what others are taking and trying to find the vitamins my nut says I need to take.  She says I need to take Iron : Ferrous Gluconate 300 mg 3 times a day.  Well I am having issues finding this type of iron.  I did find it on amazon but I was wondering about taking whole food vitamins instead.  Anyone have any input on whole food vitamins?  Amounts and kinds you take of them?  I am still pre op DS and am just trying to get everything ready for after.

Unfortunately, nuts don't know much about what we need, and generally give misinformation about the doses and kinds of vitamins we need.  I take vitalady's vitamins, and I don't waver from that. Ever.

I take Proferrin that I get from Vitalady. Her tender iron is also a good and less expense choice.

You need to be on Vita Lady's plan.  I take her Tender Iron chewables and watched my labs every 3 months for the first two years.

Here's her plan for us:

www.gblcreations.com/Resources/Gina/ProgramDRNY_ERNY_BPDDS3- 2010.pdf

You start on this plan then you adjust according to your labs.  Here are the labs you will need:

Most of us have to smile and nod at the NUTs who tend to give incomplete or incorrect advice.  This surgery will teach you to be a self-advocate that's for sure!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO; you are kidding, right??! Youre NUT told you that? Oh my... I am saddened. This is my first encounter with a NUT story. :(

There are 3 ferrous salts:
ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate and ferrous gluconate.
Ferrous gluconate has the least amount of elemental iron per serving, making it THE LEAST recommended form of iron.

Preference of the ferrous salts shouldl occur in this order:
fumarate>sulfate>gluconate

I'm sorry... find another NUT.

The vets on this site take heme iron (it has the most elemental iron per serving), but I am still not sure about its absorption ability in the DS population because it is released slowly throughout your intestine. I'm still trying to figure this out myself.  The Proferrin website states "peak changes in iron concentration are seen between 2 - 10 hours."

Considering this, I have no clue what is best; but I would say fumarate if you can tolerate it.
Otherwise, whatever works or IV iron infusions.

I did find this on Proferrin...

Sorry about the hammer toe.  But I am sure you can still find a cute pair of closed-toe shoes.  Not like you are outcast to a special hammer toe section of that store where all the shoes have large floral on them LOL.

oh, in the summer I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. It is ridiculous. Honestly.

I saw a foot doctor and he didn't want to perform surgery (good doc) because it would likely cause more problems than solutions. I can bend all of my toes down - except that one - and flip people off. Guess that's a plus. :))))))

What worked for me regarding iron is carbonyl (Vitalady's Tender Iron w/C) in the afternoons and Proferrin ES (heme iron) at bedtime. You split the Proferrin tablet into 2 pieces to get around the absorption issue. As a DSr I take 300mg of Tender iron and 1 tablet of Proferrin a day. Another thing to do as you start your iron is to only do 1 capsule of Tender iron the first few days before you add a second capsule and a third, etc. If your iron is actually low, you may be able to get your PCP to prescribe Proferrin Forte for you and save some money.

Well I don't think it matters if they are "whole food" vites or not.   They are probably trying to sell you something they sell there.  Buyer beware.

Just to show you how screwed up your program is there .... take a look at the PDF linked here from your surgeons practice.   They clearly say that  "Two Citracal tablets provide 1260 mg calcium."

THIS IS WRONG!      We need 2K mg Calcium a day so at least 3-4 SERVINGS ... 6-8 tablets a day.

Citracal® Maximim Caplet Dose

  • One serving provides 500 IU of Vitamin D

Serving Size : 2 caplets

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Take 1 to 2 caplets two times daily or as recommended by your physician, pharmacist or health professional.
