Birth controll after surgery

I take birth control pills at the moment, not to control any unwanted births, but to control uterine bleeding.  I'm hoping that after surgery and I lose enough weight, the bleeding will become normal.  If not, a hysterectomy may be in my future.

What I want to know is how does the malabsorption affect birth control pills, if at all.

Also, has anyone else had irregular uterine bleeding that righted itself after surgery?

I think it does malabsorb and here's why:

I'm on Loestrin 24 FE right now.  This is a 24 day pill, to intentionally make you menstruate for only 4 days (average).  Well, I had my first menstruation after my surgery only a week or so ago and I was leaking for a good 7 or 8 days.  It was like I wasn't even on birth control.

Just my experience, though.  I'm no doctor so I don't know for sure.

if you are using hormones to control excessive bleeding suggest talking to your gyn about mirena way before a hysterectomy.

irregular bleeding is expected post op, give it a couple of months for your body to adjust.....

Thanks.  I'll bring that up next time I go. :)

We do malabsorb the pill with the DS

I have Mirena (IUD) and It works wonders for me :) ... Mirena  is progesterone only but It might be enough for you, it was for me to control my irregular menstruation and heavy bleeding. Ask your GYN about it

Edited To Add:

They also have the NuvaRing If you want to ask your GYN about that :)

Something effects BC pills.  My surgeon gave a huge lecture about the need to use TWO methods of BC post op.  He was deadly serious and did not want any oops pregnancies too early.

What does your surgeon say on this topic?

I'm adding this to my list of things to talk about next visit.  I know that I shouldn't even think about pregnacy until you're 18 mo out.  I just want to get the bleeding under control.  It has ruled and ruined parts of my life.

I used to suffer from severe uterine bleeding with (warning: TMI ahead) major chunks of tissue that looked like liver pieces.  When it was at it's absolute worst, a super plus tampon + the biggest pad available would be completely soaked in less than 5 minutes.  On bad days, I would spend half the day in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet & showering, so going to work or anywhere else was out of the question on those days, and the scary thing was it would happen randomly at any time of the month, whether it was time for a period or not.

My gyn put me on medroxyprogesterone (a progesterone only pill) and I take 10 mg/day for 14 days per month.  My periods are so light now that it just looks like light spotting and I can sometimes go with just a pantyliner without a tampon at all.  It also comes regularly now and only lasts up to a week maxiumum compared to almost everyday before.  Although I haven't had the DS yet, my gyn believes that I'll be able to stop taking the pills shortly after surgery.

I'm on medroxyprogesterone too! Except I take 10 mg/day every day.

I personally know that I absorb my birth control pill...

I hadn't been on any type of bc for the first 8 or 9 months after surgery (no sex AT ALL for me!)

I would get a period every month like clockwork (yay DS! this didnt happen pre op!)

My doc put me on BC... and my **** is so wack!! I got a 2nd period two weeks after starting the BC... and I have it all documented in my calendar... but my period has been wack the past 3 or 4 months, because of the damn bc... a part of me wants to get off bc and let my crap be normal again... but I'm trying to wait it out...
