How to prepare for surgery
How can I prepare for my DS revision surgery when Iwon't even know if I'm having if until 2 weeks before the BIG day?
I know I need to fill out my FMLA packet 30 days before and maybe schedule my pre-op visit for 10 days before the hopeful surgery date.
What other things will I need to prepare? My hopsital is 4 hours away. I'm thinking about maybe a hotel. Still don't know who is going to drive me or who will be watching my kids. I suppose those are a few things to think about.
This is going to be really hard to plan for a surgery that may not even happen.
My revision surgery date is held for August 2nd pending my insurance appeal.
Any advice or tips are welcome
Thanks ALL

Don't know how mobile you are able to be at the moment, but if you aren't getting moderate exercise but are able to, do it. Can you start a routine of walking?
Also, this is a suggestion I remember from BT (Blackthorne) several years ago: Buy a package of balloons and exercise your lungs by blowing them up, over and over and over. It will make the deep breathing thing post-surgery a bit easier. The stronger your lungs are before surgery, the better.

I would research getting a hotel near the hospital for a few extra days. It's nice to be close to your surgeon for that week or two after surgery. The last thing you want is to have a problem after discharge and have to do that four hour drive again! Do you have a close friend or family member who can take a week off to drive you and stay with you? Also, tentatively line up Childcare arrangements so the person won't find out about it at the last minute. Submit your FMLA paperwork but explain the situation to HR, ask them to sit on it for a couple of weeks if they can. Research whether you have disability or hospitalization insurance coverage from AFLAC or something like that, at your workplace. Might be a good idea to see your PCP now (this wouldnt be the official preop visit) just to see whether they would require any special testing before clearing you. Research what food you will need at home after surgery. If you have limited help, its good to be stocked up. Make sure you have help with your kids for a few weeks AFTER surgery as well (depending on their ages). Can they go stay with a relative for a couple of weeks, or to a sleepover camp? (again, don't know their ages). The suggestions about exercising and working on breathing were excellent. I hope you get approved! Karen
