GERD and DS?

I was just reading Morganna's 4 month post and noticed that she no longer has a problem with GERD. That got me wondering. I have a Hiatal hernia and a loose LES as well as GERD. Will DS alone help or will I need them to do something else too? Morganna, did you have something done specially for the GERD or did it just go away with the DS alone? Has anyone else had experience with this? Thanks, Laura (praying that my internet access last long enough for me to see any replies)

My GERD is gone from the DS. It's pretty common to have improvement.

I'm 3 months out and have no improvement in my GERD, and it's actually worse. The Prevacid controls the burn, but I still battle regurgitation, often in my sleep and I wake up choking. My surgeon says it should improve by 6 months, and I really hope he's right. Otherwise, I'm just one of the unlucky ones. Not what anyone wants to hear, but that's my story. Annie

Yikes, it sounds like it can go both ways. I had an allergic reaction to Aciphex so Zantac is as good as I am going to get if I need to treat it. I am currently on 600mg of Zantac a day. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience. It is good to go in knowing it might go either way. Laura

the ds is a surgery used for gerd, in my case 10 years ago i had a nissan wrap for the gerd,so now i can only have the ds, once you have a ds you wont have the option to have a fundus wrap as that is the part they toss out. it not there to wrap around the esophagas to close it off when the stomach contracts to push out the pylori, at the bottom, i would think that you would want the hiatal fixed perhap during the ds. it sits right on top of the stomach. the wrap proceedure is a same day surgery now, but that would require that part of your stomach to stay, and the ds part on the bottom of it. thus so far i have found only two ds doctors familar, gagner and herron. i know because they did a coworker, made me a standout in the patients that day.

Hi Walter, That is interesting. So is the wrap something they could do at the same time as my DS? I am working with the Rabkins but havn't actually asked them about this yet. Thanks, Laura

I just had my 2 year check up today, and the one recommended change I was given was to stop taking the Aciphex and see if I actually still do have GERD. I know I did a few months after my surgery, when I had one awful night of reflux after eating chile verde, so I have been afraid to stop taking it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Diana, I sure hope it is gone once you stop the Aciphex (who names these things anyway? A$$ Effects?). I tried Aciphex recently but it gave me hives so now the strongest thing they will give me is Zantac. It seems to do the job though. Hopefully, I can look forward to hearing that you are now GERD free! Laura
