Last Thursday I went to Physcial Therapy. I am trying to learn to walk with a walker & am doing great at it. Anyway that day I was walking around the hospital(do 4 Laps) when I broke out into a cold sweat & my ears were ringing like crazy. They took my BP(which had been normal since surgery) It was 240/110. They sent me to the ER for test. Everything came out normal except BP. Told me it probably was just from all the adjusting my body was going thro. Today when I went to PT they took my pressure and it was 210/110. Needless to say had to go see the PCP. He is just at a loss over what is causing this because I have lost 75lbs. so far. Now I am on 2 BP meds again plus a fluid pill. Waaaaaaaaaaaaa, I was off all those meds since surgery. Has anyone else had this happen? At least my diabetes is still gone & I don't have to have my sleep machine for the Apnea. I would not trade this surgery for anything! Thanks for listening. Donna Butler

Had an incident on tuesday morning when after retireing for about 1hr i awoke with a very rapid heart rate,170 with a bp of 160 over 90,normal for me is bp 68 and 108/70, palpatations running wild, I was in tacardia afib, blood sugar was 97, like an idiot,i self dianosed and chilled and luckily did not die. I am a emt, know much better. the cardiologist didnot mince words when i checked in the morning. anyway,he had done a nuclear stress test two weeks prior, so i was mistakenly comforted by that. all my pre certs for surgery are done. saw my pcp later for a ekg and exam in reference to the event, she expressed concern that i may be suffering from my sleep apnea, (purpose of my story for you) she is also my pulmanist. I cannot tolarate the full rx that i require for my apnea, and can only work with about 80% of the pressure in my bipap. my bmi is 38, you indicated that you gave up on your cpap, have you had a sleep study to confirm discontinuing the cpap, you may need o2 tharapy durring your more strenguous therapy sessions, a o2 proximeter worn during exercise will dianose that in a heart beat. until you loose some more, low blood o2 will cause the heart to race, vessles to contrict and bp to rise to get more blood to the brain to compensate. just a laymans imput.

Have you had potassium level checked? When I was in the hospital, my potassium level was really low and my BP went crazy like 260/180 and the surgeons gave me shots to bring down the BP and gave me potassium through my feeding tube. -joanne s

Hi Joanne. When I was in the ER they did blood work. Said everything looked fine. My EKG & chest x-ray were good too. My PCP looked it all over again today & said all was well with all that. Hope the Meds work but I sure wanted to be off all those. Thanks for responding. Hope all is well with you. Donna Butler

When I talked to my PCP about WLS he told me that even after I have surgery sometimes you still have to take your meds. I take insulin also and I was well informed when I went to him and he said sometimes it just doesn't help. But don't give up,.. it may take a longer time for you then someone else. As long as they can get it down and keep it down, and you keep loosing your going to be fine. If you have something wrong I am sure they will find it out and what it is soon. Just keep the faith, and you will be fine. Marylin newbie switcher

Thanks Marylin for the reassurance. My PCP said that all the changes going on in my body and the renewal of activity has everything all mixed up. Hopefully it will all settle down. It was good to be off the meds for a while & maybe that will happen again soon. Donna Butler

Hi Donna! Congratulations on the improved mobility. Take your meds and give this some time. When people with reduced mobility start walking again, it's a big change. It's not uncommon for blood pressure problems to reappear. It's usually temporary. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Patty. It is so good to be back on my feet again after four years in a wheelchair. I am able to do so much more since this wonderful surgery. Still can't do Wal-Mart but this too shall pass I'm sure. Hopefully this is just a small glitz in the scheme of things. I am so Blessed for all the changes that have taken place. This shall work out also I am sure. Thanks again. Donna Butler

Diabetes frequently goes away very shortly after surgery but hypertension does not. Had you consulted with you PCP about going off your BP meds? Sounds like you definitely still need them. As your weight loss continues you may be able to reduce the dosages and or numbers of these meds, but please do so only with the advice and on-going monitoring of your healthcare provider. Hope you feel better soon!
