Weird carb question?
Tonya,
That is simply all I was asking...it is like one of those things that make you go HMMMMMMMMM!!!!????????
My surgeon strongly advised protein first, and only then eat a veggie/fruit(preferrably a veggie over the fruit) and only then have carbs if you have room. Well most of the time there is no room!!!!
But I am human and have eaten carbs and paid the price!

As have we all (well, maybe not Melissa), but the rest of us know exactly what you are talking about. Just last night, someone handed me a just-baked still-warm cookie, chocolate chip, and I ate it. I do cheat with carbs, but I try to save the cheating for the truly important ones--great cheesecake, extraordinary pastry, etc--not just everday oreos or spagetti. And, like you, I know the DS is a stern taskmaster and will punish me for it.
You raise a really interesting point, though. Are the people who are having vitamin/calcium etc deficiencies those that are eating more carbs? Something that should be studied!

I know for myself I wanted maximum weight loss in the shortest length of time.........for health reasons the sooner I got the weight off my joints the less damage they were going to suffer and hopefully the longer I would be able to go before knee replacement (autoimmune arthritis)
So for me it was very strict eating to start with-----yes I dieted the first year until I lost 75 of excess then I started adding back in the carbs in a very controlled way. I love the carbs!!!! Now at goal I have them usually trying to save the carb calories for things I really love.
Yes you can eat carbs earlier out---but you may find it takes longer to lose the weight.
1)this can be a problem if you lose motivation and do not get to goal
2)for many of us we have a real carb addiction cycle-eat carbs, increase blood suger release insulin, drop blood sugar need to eat more carbs...the appetite thing can get the best of us
3)balancing carbs to protein can be real work....protein satiates hunger for longer, carbs make you hungrier---***my trick is carbs only with protein or 2 hours before a protein rich meal (this is the time frame for the insulin-hypoglycemia fueled appetite)
4)learning to eat in a new way-protein first, then veggies>fruit and FATS are not limited!!!
personally for me it the fat that I endulge in, we don't absorb 80% of fats(Cornell study) so bring on the full-fat dressings, vegetables and meats sauted in olive oil, butter...........let me have food that tastes great. Also I go for the fattier snacks- forget fat free, or lowfat..............this is so different than any dieting I had ever done in the past ( and we know that they all those diets failed for me or I would not have had wls in the first place)it took a long for me to get used to eating this way.
gratitude is my attitude
