Topic: RE: Kidney Tumor
Lenore--Please don't panic.  If you caught it early you have a great chance of a full recovery.  My father recently found out he had a tumor on his kidney.  Most of these tumors are malignant but quite treatable if caught early.  Anyway, Dad had no symptoms and the tumor was discovered coincidentally after an MRI for something else.

We researched the options and although he contemplated cryosurgery he opted to fry that thing!  (A probe was passed into the tumor and an electrical current used to cook the tumor from the inside.)  It was done as an outpatient under twilight sedation.  He had only a small puncture wound on his lower back which was hardly painful at all and was basically covered with a bandaid.

He has been back three times for follow up and it has shrunk and died according to his doctor.  He looks and feels great and recommends this procedure to anyone with a similar problem.

I hope you find your outcome as successful.  Wishing you all the best!

Topic: RE: Asked to be in a wedding this summer. But Planning DS for summer could I do both?
I had major abdominal surgery (not the DS) about 6 weeks before my sister's wedding and was a bridesmaid.  I made it through the day but it was extremely exhausting.  The fitting of the dress prior to that day was also quite uncomfortable.  Had she not been my sister I would not have done it.

What if you offer to do something other than be a bridesmaid?  Maybe do a reading or some other thing that allows you to participate to a lesser degree?  If you explain the situation and offer to be a part of her big day, she shouldn't feel slighted.

Lori--Thanks!  Nice job!  It's important for those of us contemplating this surgery to hear this.  A reality check once in a while keeps things in proper perspective.  Lisa

The only thing I would add to what has already been said is that the problem may be the receptionist not the doc--they are the "gatekeepers" you know!  So I agree with the suggestion of making an appointment with your letter already written and see the doc personally to argue your case.

You have my sympathy!  I have recent first-hand experience with kidney stones and they were far worse than childbirth (and my kids were born natural with no meds at all!)  After being in severe pain for two days I ended up in the ED two nights in a row in excruciating pain, the urologist's office the day after that and finally ended up with a stint.

Go to the ED if you are still in a lot of pain and insist they help you, then get thee to a good urologist as an emergency appointment in the AM!  There is no need to suffer so.

Happy birthday, good luck and feel better soon!

P.S.  You can also hope that lazy-a** nurse has her own round of kidney stones some day!

Just an FYI-- we always tell our patients to take their iron on an empty stomach with orange juice for maximum absorption, but they haven't had the DS.  Lisa

Hi!  Regarding the sleep study ask ahead of time if they can give you a sleeping pill.  The first time I didn't and it took me a long time to fall asleep.  The second time I asked and it really helped me fall asleep fast.  Good luck.  Lisa

Lacey,
I have been in touch with Dr. Marchesini within the past two weeks.  His new email address is [email protected].  If you contact him via email he will get back to you within a day or two.  He seems very approachable and very willing to answer any questions including those about cost.

Topic: RE: I HATE CPAP MACHINE!!
They are available many places but I've found some to be very hard.  You will probably need to experiment to find what you like.  The one I use I ordered from QVC.  It is two layers--one is memory foam, the other is fiberfill.  I use the memory foam side up with a soft down or down-like pillow on top.  I like that I can create a small gap beneath my mask and the soft pillow so that it doesn't put pressure on the mask and make it leak/hiss.  This keeps me up every time and drives both of us crazy.  FYI--I tried an $80 "special pillow for c-pap users" from my sleep disorder doc's office and knew immediately it was too hard for me.  Thankfully they took it back.

Maybe in time we won't need these machines.  In the meantime try different things until you hit upon what works for you.

Topic: RE: I HATE CPAP MACHINE!!
I've been using my c-pap for about three years (have not been switched yet) and I, too, have a love/hate relationship with it.  I have tried at least eight different masks and do not love any of them--some are just more tolerable than others.  My problem is leaking of air around my face but I just keep trying different types.  I have close "relationships" with my my sleep specialist's respiratory therapist and Apria!  I'm always asking about what is new.  I've tried many and rejected most.  However, once in a while I discover something promising and give it a try.  I know pretty quickly if it will be worth trying before I leave the office--if it makes a lot of noise aound my face it's a no-go for sure.  It does often takes a few weeks to get minor issues with one I can tolerate worked out and adjusted on my face right.  Even so, some nights I fight with the mask to get a comfortable position that does not leak.  (I am a side sleeper.)

Try a couple different pillows.  I find a soft one (down or down-like) on top of a somewhat flattish (is that a word?) memory foam pillow gives me the support I need but is mold-able around my mask (which covers my nose only).

As far as intimacy, that takes place before putting on the mask.  Besides, a little humor in the bedroom can be good for a marriage--and boy, do I look funny in that thing!  But we both sleep better for it.  I will, however be glad to give it up someday and find something else to laugh about.

Good luck!

Topic: RE: Worst news in my life...need help on ideas from my second family
I'm so very sorry you and your friend are having to face such sad news!  As far as ideas I would add that she may want to create a memory book/journal for each child so that when she is gone they have a personal memory book of their own.  If she is their birth mother she may want to start with the moment she found out she was expecting them and how she felt, the landmarks of the pregnancy and the story of their births.  If they are adopted, she could modify this to fit her situation.  My adult kids still get a kick about hearing those stories, so her's may also.

Topic: RE: Scar Treatments
My dermatologist recommended piercing a vitamin E capsule and applying it to the surgical area a couple times a day to minimize scarring from a procedure I had which covered a large area on my body.  I did this for a week or so as I recall.  It seemed to work well.  I usually get nasty scars but not the time I used the vitamin E.  It's inexpensive too.

Nancy--
I'm so sorry for your loss!  I also lost my Mom, who was my cheerleader and best friend, not too long ago so I understand how it feels.  It gets easier with time but I miss her every day.

Good luck with your surgery.
