that's the question of the day. what exactly does "femme" mean to you? and butch? how's about that one? when you think of someone who's "butch" or "femme", what characteristics do you think of? are YOU butch or are YOU femme? and while i'm asking... what tha heck am i???

see, that's what all i don't understand. so many terms and so many ways to take them all... and honestly, my ex was more butch PHYSICALLY than me but claimed that *I* was the butch one in our relationship. but i just don't see that... maybe it's the "mother" in me? thinking i'm femme because of the maternal nature?? idk...

You bring up an interesting point. There are so many degrees of "butch" and "femme," with more being recognized all the time. It's pretty fascinating.

Personally, I think it has NOTHING to do with your sexuality. I have heard butch used to describe a straight female. This includes myself. Imma tomboy, wants to play football since the weight loss, likes action movies more than romantic ones, love cars, loves sports. I still love wearing man's pants. I usually think of femme as the girly girl. Into make-up, clothes, jewlery. Ya know all the girly stuff. I would so call you femme. Yes, you may have moved a house all alone. But dang it who else was gonna do it, ya did what needed to be done.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Well this is a really open ended question.  I can tell you that I'm neither butch nor femme.........I think it really depends on strength of character and the roles people play when they are together.  But as for me, I'm just me......

I strongly identify as a "butchy femme" ... or is it a "femmy butch"  I can never get it straight (in a matter or speaking).  I guess it depends on whether I'm wearing mascara that day or changing the oil in my car.  OMG -- what if I'm wearing mascara while I change the oil??  Then of course you can be "femme on the streets, but butch between the sheets" -- it's really awfully complicated.

All kidding aside, our culture conditions us to understand certain traits and characteristics as either "masculine" or "feminine," and we all have some of each.  A lesbian who more closely identifies with the masculine role in our society might describe herself as "butch" (and vice-versa).  The danger is when these terms are used to stereotype and ultimately limit people.

Just be yourself.  Labels are best suited to canned goods.
