I am scheduled for surgery with Dr Inman at 8am tomorrow morning and I am terrified. I was just wondering if anyone else felt this way and if so how did you deal with it?

Thank you very much. My sister is going to stay all night with me up there tomorrow but she has no clue how to get on here and post an update. And if anyone is up at the hospital and wants to stop by I would really like that.  I am looking very forward to being on the loser's bench.

yes, I was nervous the night before and I hardly got any sleep because I was worrying so much...   so what I did was try think about how life would be 3 or 4 months from now and how great I was going to look and feel.  It that helped. I will tell you that the first day... will be pretty easy because all you will do is sleep...  all day and all night.. the nurses will come in and bug you every few hours giving you meds, checking your tummy etc.   The second will be the worse out of all of them...  it wont' be anything you can't bear.. it will just be the hardest...  you will still want to sleep alot, but you will have to be sure to get up and walk as much as you can so you won't get bad gas pains.  My hospital rates pain from 0-10 with 0 being nothing and 5 being moderate and 10 unbearable.  My pain level most of the time was about a 3 but sometimes it went to 5 and most of that was due to gas..   When I felt a gas build up coming on I would always buzz the nurses for a shot of morphine.... that took the edge off and I would get out of bed and walk and usually within a short time I would pass most of the gas.   I will warn you about one thing... and I'm glad my doctor shared this with me or there would have been a big mess in the hallway..  lol..   He told me that the first BM will come about day 3... and it will usually feel like gas..  but to go to the toilet because it could be a BM....  he was right...   The first 4 BMs I  had felt just like gas...but I'm glad I was on the toilet!  LOL...   Also.. don't be alarmed by the first BMs.   They will be dark reddish purple... kind of like you ate a bunch of mullberries.  This is  normal..   what you see is old (dried) blood, extra skin and tissue leftover from sugery.  The following days will be pretty easy.. with only moderate pain...   Atleast that is how my surgery went.   Everyone is different of course... but I was surprised how easy it was overall.   Best of luck tomorrow... I'm sure you will do fine...   Oh and btw.. don't be surprised if the first 2 days you think to yourself... "Did I do the wrong thing?"....   cuz I know I did...    but by the 3rd day I knew I had done the RIGHT thing.  ;) Hugs, Jackie

Mary, I can honestly say I wan't scared at all.  I had confidence in my surgeon, St. vincents and most of all God.  I knew what I was doing was the right thing for me because I had done years of research about the surgery before I decided to do it.  So by the the time I got done fighting with my insurance company they couldn't get me into surgery fast enough.  So tonight, say your prayers and get a good nghts sleep because tomorrow is the first day of your new life.  You have a wonderful surgeon and you have to trust that she will see you through this.  I know you will do fine and look forward to seeing furture posts from you lovingg how the pounds are just falling off.  I'll add you to my prayers in the morning.

I think it's normal to be scared...I am not too scared *YET* but i'm sure it will hit the closer my surgery gets...I mean I have children and a husband and a life I love...I don't want to leave it, but bottom line: if I don't do something to reduce my weight I might not be around to enjoy it as long as I want to be...so I'm putting it in GOD'S hands....I will be praying for you tomorrow morning.

Blessings,

jen

Like Jan, I put my faith in God, and faith in my surgeon. Then I relax and enjoy the drugs...lol. At St. V's...they get you up for your first walk within a few hours that you come out of recovery. So...the first day there isn't all snoozeville. And yep..you're sore..but I didn't think it was too bad. Here's to a speedy recovery! Sherri
