pre op diet
so i am in month 7 of my 6 month required diet and really starting to struggle. we are submitting to insurance on monday, so i know that i have at least 3 months before i can have surgery. i am scared that i am going to regain the 37# i have lost and wont get to have surgery. most days i do really good as far as carbs (my limit is 200 grams @ day) but i have a relly hard time sticking to the 60- 70 grams of protein @ day (i want more!) any suggestions on how to tough it out without feeling deprived all the time????????
Heidi,
How are you doing on your water intake? Get in at least 64 oz...100 or more would be even better. Cut out caffiene. It's an appetite stimulant. It also can dehydrate you so for every ounce you drink, you need 2 oz of water just to counter it's affects. Since you are pre-op, drink a full glass of water before you eat. It'll fill you up somewhat. After you eat though, wait ~30 minutes or so before you start drinking again. (*post-ops..no drinking 30 minutes before/after or during meals as liquids will wash food right out of your pouch).
I am also surprised that your carb limit is so high. Remember that I'm post-op, but I was told to get a minimum of 100 g of carbs with at least 30 g of it being fiber (non-digestible carbs). I targeted 100-120 g and ate 1 cup of Fiber One cereal to be sure I got the fiber (that is 28 g). Are you getting your 60-70 g of protein via protein drinks or meat? Try getting it in mainly with skinless chicken breasts. That would add bulk to your diet. Protein drinks are great when you are post-op to get in as much protein as possible with very little space to put it. When you are pre-op though, choose low-fat meats instead that can take up that space in your stomach. And eat it first..before you add any carbs. Also, limit your fat intake. I was told to keep it under 30 g per day. Also, my calorie intake was to be 1000-1200 per day. Were you given a range?
How are you tracking all of this? There are several programs out there that is excellent for doing this. Many people use Fitday.com. My preference is SparkPeople.com (check it out, I think you'll see why). It is a good habit to get in to both pre & post-op! I am also big on preaching for folks to read their product labels. Get the one with the lowest calories and fat. Now...I will go with 5 more cal per serving if it takes me from 2 g of fat to zero and keeps the sugar content low.
BTW...I rarely feel deprived! I did at Christmas time with no fruitcake but now I found a sugar-free one so I don't anymore over it either! You can enjoy wonderful food and them be healthy & good for you!
