Calcium vitamins post-op

I am pre-op and I currently take the Citracal bites for the calcium and vitamin D.  Will I be able to take them immediately post-op?  Or should I get a different form of calcium for awhile?

You'll probably just have to wait & see.  Some people find the Citrical bites too sweet immediately post-op, but can take them again later.  Some can take them fine.  I love mine, but I'm almost 2 yrs out.  Don't panic though, there are plenty of alternatives.  BariatricAdvantage.com has several flavors of losenges that you just let disolve in your mouth.  And I was told I could swallow the tablets almost immediately.  So, I'm sure you'll find something that will work for you.

I haven't been able to find the Citrical bites for a long time, so I am using the losanges from Bariatriceating.com. They are alittle grainy, but good. I didn't have any problems from the beginning. Wishing you the best!

Hey Ellen! I ordered 10 boxes of the Citrucel from Drugstore.com (see the link). They only cost $7.59 a box and orders over ~$50 gets free shipping...plus I'll have $3.80 applied to my next order! You may want to check them out. Sherri

Theres also a liquid Calcium Citrate called Calcium Care that you can order off CVS's website or have the pharmacist order it. It's like 20.00 or so but it should last a month. You take 3 tbsp a day.

Thanks everyone!  I think I am going to get a liquid or tablet for back up for when I come home, just in case the citracal's are too sweet right afte surgery. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Where are you finding your Citracal's at? I am doing the Bariatric Advantage ones right now and don't like them. As Ellen says, grainy! They are scratchy on my throat and makes it tickle..and coughing isn't very good on me right now. If I could find the Citracals, I would definately be taking them instead!  Back when I had my surgery, the awareness wasn't there that it was the citrite form of calcium we needed, not corbonate. So...post-op..I think it was the day after surgery...the hospital gave me calcium chews (viactiv..I think is the name of them). It was like getting a little treat..but very filling! LOL! They weren't too sweet for me. It seems like I pretty much stuck to the caramel ones though. Chocolate just wasn't that good to me. Good luck on your upcoming surgery! Sherri

Sherri,   I have been ordering the Citracal bites from drugstore.com.  They seem to always be in stock and usually arrive within the week. Here is a link: http://www.drugstore.com/search/search_results.asp?N=0&Ntx=m ode%2Bmatchallpartial&Ntk=All&srchtree=1&Ntt=citracal+ They have the lemon, choc, and caramel.  I haven't tried the lemon, but do like the caramel over the choc.

Thanks for the link! I plan on ordering me some!!! Back when you use to be able to find them in any pharmacy section, I had preferred the caramel too...and I didn't like the lemon at all. Sherri
