I Feel Stupid Asking This..

Okay..I work at Jenny Craig and I'm talking to a coworker about how difficult it is for me to get my protein in for the day  etc.. she than goes and gets out this Jenny Craig cookbook and flips to the weight and measurement chart and say s that there is 28 ounces in a gram of protein and if you mutiply 28 by the ounces you are eating you'll get the amount of protein grams..???? Her point that she was trying to make was that using her formula...??????? I should be able to easily get in my protein for the day by just eating a few ounces of cheese and maybe some meat. I just kept shaking my head..no..no..no..I told her I know I don't have all the info right off the top of my head or at my fingertips at that moment..but she is wrong!! I said there are WAY TOO many people constantly commenting on having problems with protein..so I know she is incorrect! Isn't our daily goal 90 grams of protein?Or 90-100? I used to have this info somewhere..but where when I need it?!!! I need some solid easy to understand info I can take back to this lady about our requirements..especially since very soon I will be starting the program myself..I am hoping to get rid  of at the very least 30 lbs and at the most 50. So I want whoever is going to be my consultant to be fully aware of my needs. This lady keeps trying to tell me that my lifestyle isn't all that different from hers in terms of how much she eats.  WRONG. She doesn't seem to understand why I poo pooed her protein water which had a measly 5 grams of protein in it..I am not going to waste $1.50 a bottle just to get 5 measly grams of protein..not going to happen! She doesn't understand about not being able to tolerate sugar or the fact I am lactose intolerant. I honestly think  that she thinks  I am trying to set myself apart from all the everyday people..well..we are different! We have different needs..just like diabetics etc.. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks for any input..I appreciate it!

I was told to get a MINIMUM of 65 to 75 g of protein in a day.  I would go in there with the labels from a protein drink as well as a label from some cheese  and meat so she can see what we ACTUALLY need and that her little formula obviously is not what our docs are talking about.  Maybe she's just not getting it?  They do need to have someone on hand to help with clients who have had WLS. Good luck!!

I had fought the same ideas with Weigh****chers that Becky had gone too. I stopped doing that.   Protein helps maintain muscle.  In losing weight you can both loose muscle and fat.  Your body will take the easier route and borrow from muscle before fat.  We take larger amount of protein in order to keep our muscle mass.  I now weigh 187 lbs which is 18 lbs over a healthy BMI.  I only have 12% body fat as tested by the Bod Pod at NIFS.  The optimum body fat for a man is 9 to 12 %.  I could loose 8 more lbs of body fat to get to the 9% but to do that I need to increase protein to maintain muscle. This is how I understand the process.  Remember most consultants at Weigh Watchers, Jenny Craig, Cardinal Fitness are NOT trained professionals.  Take information from a registered dietitian and someone who has been trained and holds degrees in exercise management. To my knowledge all trainers at NIFS have a BS degree and some have Master degrees. We are told by St. V's that they don't take outside patient and I think it is because you CAN"T blend plans to get a good outcome.  Don't look to Clarion because they say you can eat ????  Jenny Craig says you can have ???? protein.  Most of all don't try to convince them they are wrong.  Follow what your Dr. and or Staff have set as a good path. Yeah..I was polite of course because I realize that someone who has had WLS is beyond the basic training they receive at places like this..but I don't want to bash anyone..I do work there! LOL I'll just continue being my own advocate..that's all you can do..look out for yourself and as always follow the guidelines given by my surgeon and the dieticians.

I do though think when I get started on the program will make sure I'm put on the diabetic version that way we won't have to keep haggling over sugar! I've been looking at the labels on the JC food and their food is geared toward the government food pryramid...protein is first..the protein content is pretty good..the lowest I've seen on an entree is 18 grams of protein..and that is not bad.

So since I get half off, I am going to give it a try..see what happens! Kind of exciting..

Kathlene, I was also told to get a minimum of 60 g of protien. If I understand your first post correctly, the JC employee showed where their manual states that there was 28 grams of protein per ounce of food. Not all food is created equally. Not all protein foods are created equally. I don't know of ANY food which contains 28 g of protein per ounce. Seafood is known as being one of the highest in it's protein content. The highest I found so far is tuna at 8.5 g of protein per ounce (and 0.3 g of fat per ounce...compared to lean ground beef at 5 g of protein per ounce with 5.9 g of fat per ounce). This link may help you out some:  http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/reference_proteins.asp. SparkPeople is also a great place to get the nutritional values of foods (as well as a wealth of other information). I think it's going to be a good lesson for those at JC to learn that perhaps they need a program for post-WLS customers...that is, if they'd like to have them as customers. Sherri
