HELP! I'm in pain!

I don't know if this has anything to do with my surgery or not but I am having the worst back pain I have ever had.  It started yesterday afternoon.  It's on the right side and spreads over to my hip.  The pain is located right where my hip curves in.  I was thinking kidney stone but it feels too much like a muscle pain.  It calms down when Troy massages it.  My mom gave me some pain meds she has and it's taken the edge off but is still extremely sore.  I've got a message in at Dr. Diaz's office because my dr here isn't open on Wednesday.  I honestly can't think of anything I could've done to make this happen.  I just want it to stop!   What have I done?  Any ideas? Jacqui, I recently started having similar pain, lower back, hip and sometimes radiating down my leg.  Here's the scoop.  It is a pinched sciatic nerve caused by my pelvis rotating forward and down on my right side.  I am a side sleeper and chronic leg-crosser.  Since I no longer have these huge thighs holding my knees apart while I'm sleeping my pelvis tends to rotate (I mostly sleep on my left side so the right half of the pelvis rotates).  I usually cross my right leg over my left causing further rotation.  My doc sent me to physical therapy where they did massage and stretching  to get the muscle to relax.  Then they gave me some simple exercises (pelvic tilt, etc) to strengthen my abs to hold my pelvis in place and keep it from rotating. Call your primary care doc and see what he says.  After this major, life-changing surgery it is easy to project all our aches and pains onto WLS and think it must have something to do with it all, but the truth is, if it isn't gastro-intestinal related, it most likely isn't WLS related. Take care and I'll be praying for you.

Jacqui do you have your gall bladder? MY mom pain like that for a year before they figured out that it was her gall bladder... if you still have yours that needs to be the first thing that they check since it's almost always a given that after this surgery you lose your gall bladder

I know you're problem thinking no way it could cause pain there, but they thought that my mom's was her sciatic nerve as well and gave her cortisone shots in her spine and everything before they figured out it was her gall bladder... so just check on that first

sure sounds like sciatica to me.  I had surgery in July to have two bone spurs shaved out of the scitaic nerve.  (also shaved off 5 bulging discs.)  I found resting it for a few days and taking something for the inflammation will often do the trick.  That worked for years, till the bone spurs got too big.  Muscle spasms can also irritate the nerve and getting it to relax will take care of it.   My pain management doc had me use heat pack for 15 mins then ice pack for 15 minutes.  (the ice pack actually felt GOOD!  I am assuming it helped reduced the inflammation)  I was told this would help loosen a tight muscle.  Worked for me.  good luck to you!  back pain SUCKS!  I hope you get better soon!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.  I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back.  Dr. Diaz's nurse called me yesterday and said if I didn't live so far away and if Indy wasn't getting dumped on with snow, she'd have me come in.  She made me promise to see my pcp today.  I went there this morning and it turns out I have a torn muscle.  It's super duper painful.  There's nothing much I can do about it either.  He gave me some pain meds and told me to keep a heating pad on it.  I spent most of today at my parents' house in their hottub.  It felt wonderful.  I had to call Dr. Diaz's office when I found out what it was and he told me to up my protein to help the muscle heal better.  It will take a few days but it should be better before long. Thanks again! Jacqui
