Liver problems and WLS

My cousin had WLS I am going to say about 2 years ago. Now I don't know all the details but ended up having to have a liver transplant.  This past fall during the operation he died. His family said it was a result from the WLS (his liver going bad). I didn't ask any other questions.  Now I am hearing different ones talk about their livers.  Just a coincidence or is there a rise in liver trouble in WLS patients? Thanks  Robin

Everything I find leads me to believe that liver problems from being obese may cause the problem.   It is there before the surgery and may manifest itself even if GPS is not performed.   I know that is a reason also that vitamin and calcium therapy is STRESSED after the procedure.  It is important to help the body stay fit. I do know from my experience that I had Psoriases bad on my hands and legs before the surgery.  I do not have it now in those areas but do have it on my elbows.  The Rehab center my father in law is at had a lady that had received a liver transplant and her psoriasis went away.  All I can say is with a new pouch and eating healthier I believe I am reversing some effects that my internal organs were going through. I AM NOT SAYING GPS cures psoriasis!!! E

2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou has done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

I can't blame my WLS. I had some high liver enzymes and stuff pre op as well but it's been years. Also liver disease runs in my family on my dads side. He had non alcoholic cirrohsis. Obviously I don't have a diagnosis yet because I don't see the liver specialist til April 4 (my appointment got moved) and soooo we don't really know what the deal is. One time my liver would show fatty preop others it didn't. It was never mentioned after my surgery that it was enlarged or caused any issues for Dr. C either. Sooo I don't really know what is the deal. Like I said right now we're just trying to find out whats going on.

I did a medical search on this topic a few months ago and found an article called "Gastrointestinal and Nutritional Complications After Bariatric Surgery" (Am J Gastroenterology 2007;102(11):2571-2580).  Basically, it says the only known liver problems after WLS are gallstones or gallbladder sludge and vitamin/mineral deficiencies.  There were no reported increases in cirrhosis, liver transplant or death due to liver disease.  One small study showed that WLS was the only thing that helped reverse non-alcoholic liver disease (fatty liver) which is associated with obesity.
