Dumping Syndrome

I know this is going to sound funny but I'm tempted to eat something wrong just to see if I will dump.  I've been reading some posts this morning and people write about how they dump on this and that.  So far, I've not allowed myself to eat anything that would cause it.  I'm scared!!!  I mean I've had some small amounts of sugar...like a girl scout cookie or two (the shortbread ones only have 1 sugar per cookie).  I've avoided anything that has more than 4 sugars.  I think the closest I've come is when I drink my hot chocolate made with milk.  If I make it with milk instead of water I feel really yucky afterwards.  I sweat a lot and feel really full.  It's not painful, just uncomfortable.  My sister, who is 6+ years out, says I have no idea what dumping is and she's right.  She eats the wrong stuff ALL THE TIME and just allows herself to dump.  She's miserable when it happens.  She drinks regular sodas and eats candy, cakes and cookies.  She's lost over 190 lbs and has kept it off.  I'm scared I'm going to be a failure though.    I really need a support group don't I?

Oh well....have a great day everyone.

I have not dumped in a long time.  I was probably 45 days out and ate a small amount of cream of chicken soup and all of a sudden up it came.  I had ate it before and have tried it again since without dumping. The best advice is to NOT eat anything that is not good for you to have.  I don't miss beef hamburger for now.  Do I say why not try one.  Yes I do but I don't need to eat it to survive.  My foods satisfy me now and I am not going to add just because I can. I do take my protein sources [fish, turkey and lean pork products] and cook them in different ways to add variety.  GFS has a Jamaican Jerk seasoning that really taste good to me on all the protein sources I use.  I will cook Mexican style and use whole grain tortilla 6 inch size.  I stay away from acid type foods still at 11 months out.  I don't want to aggravate the little pouch.  I weigh myself every morning and if I have gained more then 4 lbs I watch my portion size closer.  Usually in a day or 2 I am back at my usual 185 lbs.  Would I like to get to 170 yes I would and with warm weather approaching and outdoor exercise I will probably get to that weight. Just don't try foods that are in a box, fast food, or not whole grain or wholesome.  You will do fine.

2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou has done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

Don't tempt fate! If you can stay away from those foods, you will do better in the long run. Eat to live, don't live to eat, right? Besides, worse than dumping,  you might find out that you DON"T dump, and will be so tempted to eat what you want then.

Dumping is different for each person and the severity depends on how much you abuse your pouch.  Your description of how you feel after drinking your hot chocolate made with milk is a mild form of dumping.  Find a sugar free version of your hot chocolate and make it with water.  Then add some non-dairy creamer (i.e. coffeemate****il it has the creamier texture you are looking for.  It could be that your hot chocolate mix has too  much sugar for you or that it combined with the natural sugars in the milk are too much for you.  If you are using Nesquik, there is a sugar free version and then you could probably use skim milk without a problem.  But if you are using a mix (i.e. Swiss Mix, etc.) you definitely want to find the sugar free version.  Then you can experiment with milk and water or a combination of both to find your comfort level. DON"T push your pouch.  I've done it and it is miserable.  There is no reason to put yourself through that.  If there is something that you just have to have a taste of, come on here looking for a sugar free version or recipe.  Between Sherri, Brenda, myself and a few others, we've probably got a recipe for you.

And don't worry about failing.  You have your tool, you have us and you have the desire to succeed.

Hey thanks everyone for the encouragement.  It's just really scary. I drink Swiss Miss No Sugar Added hot chocolate but sometimes I use milk if I need to get in a bit of protein.  I drink at lease two cups a day of the hot chocolate at work and if my protein number is low for the day, I drink a cup made with milk before I go to bed.  Guess I'll stop using the milk. Hope everyone has a great evening.  I'm in the 3-6 inch zone for snow tomorrow so I may be at home all day! Be safe and stay warm! Jacqui

I dump on weird stuff. I can do up to 20 g of sugar (they still tell me to drink gatorade on the days I can't keep much down) even though I don't usually do it unless I'm drinking Gatorade or juice. However sometimes Mayo makes me dump (I had tuna from Subway one day that was loaded with lots more mayo than normal) and I was absolutely miserable, cold sweats, hurting, heaving, gassy and all that. My opinion I wouldn't tempt it.

You ARE dumping. Please don't try something that you should not have. I made that mistake and regret it everyday. Once you get the taste back for something, you will continue to want it. Please use your tool better than I have mine!

Jacqui, Many people go through dumping...mild or otherwise...quite by accident and with something they never thought would give them a problem. At ~3.5 yrs post-op, I assume that I WILL dump..and therefore, do not know for sure. I don't want to know for sure! I would get so aggrevated at people being disappointed that they don't dump and I would think 'why did you try it to find out?'. I just think 'this will make me sick as a dog' and that is enough to keep me away from whatever 'this' is. I hope I never find out my 'limit'.  I get queezy with sf hot chocolate if I make it with milk...I always have though, even pre-op. I think it's a form of lactose intollerence. I get the sweats along with it..but no diahrea (like with true dumping). I'm fine if I stick to making it with water...and then melt some of my sf marsh mallows in it! Yummmm! You have a support group honey! Sherri
