what to wear in the hospital? (ladies)

I am 5 days RNY. My doc was Dr Evanson, too. Great doc. Going home, I just wore what I had on when I went to the hospital. Baggy t-shirt and elastic loose fitting pants. I also had a sweater to cover up the fact I did not have a bra on. (Like that fooled anybody) The nurse just taped my wedding band. During the stay, I wore the hospital gown. When I walked, the nurse just taped the back, since it was so big. It was nice to find a hospital gown that actually covered everything. The comment about the pillow was a good idea. I didn't think about it before my surgery, but I keep a small pillow in my car, so I was safe. I took a book I had been wanting to read. Didn't read a word of it. Most of the time I was catching up on some much needed sleep and the rest was used walking, walking, walking. Good Luck.

Oh, I'll definitely keep it simple...my main concern was about a bra, since the hospital gowns are so big on me.  When I had my pre op testing two weeks ago, it kept slipping off my shoulder and way low in front.  I do have some t shirts and yoga pants I could take that would be a bit more concealing.

Good point on the pillow! I'll make sure to have an extra one in the van...I don't think I'll take my own to have in the hospital, from what I understand they'll be getting me up every two hours anyway, so lengthy solid sleep won't be happening until I get home.

Hi Amy, I took some of my shorts with me and put them on with a hostital gown. Tusseie tape (paper tape )   doesn't always stay ON while you are walking. I seen many bare BUTS, LOL so I covered my but,
I can see your but !!

If you want to bring something to wear other than the gowns, I would stick with sweatpants, yoga type pants, or PJs.  Nothing with a "fit" to them, like jeans or slacks.  Plan on having your stomach very distended and larger than when you came in.  You most likely will not want anything snug around your waist.  You can get by with the gowns -- they tape them shut in the back and you can wear a second gown as a robe.  But I'm a nurse and I have an issue with wearing the gowns myself so I don't blame you for wanting other clothes!!  Some people are fine wearing them but I know other patients are much more comfortable in their own comfy clothing.  On the day of surgery I would just plan on wearing gowns, but by post-op day one you may want some of your own clothing.  And for shoes, make sure they are something you can easily slip on, because you are not going to want to bend over to get them on.  For me,  I would even go buy a new pair of shoes for this reason if you don't already have something at home like this!  Hey, any reason for a new pair of shoes! Good Luck with your surgery! Jennifer

Thanks for the tips! I'll probably pack my jammies (flannel elastic/drawstring pants and a loose long sleeved t shirt) as well as loose fitting yoga and stretch pants, just because I would be much more comfortable in my own clothes.  For shoes, I think my crocs will do fine as I can walk in those and easily slip them on without bending over.  My dad warned me that my feet will probably shrink, so I'm hesitant to buy new shoes right now...but if I didn't have the crocs, I probably would!!

i wore the hospital gown until my iv was locked off. it's really too hard to wear tshirts or anything when those iv cords are in the way. i will admit to throwing a little pary when i got to put on panties yesterday. i am not a commando person by any means. i just made them ride low or pulled over the binder. i also started wearing yoga pants on day two. i brought a bathrobe with me, and that really helped make me comfortable when i took my walks. i have a pair of slip on new balance mules, but honestly, i just wore the footie gripper things they gave me. much less of an effort. keep up on your pain meds. and walk, walk, walk.

Amy, I forgot about taking the pillow too. I got one from the surgeon so that is why I forgot all about it. It didn't come in helpful to me when I coughed but it helped when I turned myself over on my side. You want one that is fairly firm though but not hard.
