Ice Cream

Are we allowed to have SF, low fat ice cream?  If so, is it considered a liquid?  Like if I mixed it with milk and kind of made a shake out of it.

I'd email the dietitians and ask. I lack severely on my calories most days (like 500-600 short) and I was told to make me a shake out of hagen daaz and fruit and protein powder or something like that.

It's your choice.  How well do you tolerate sugar alcohols?  If you don't tolerate them, then I would pass on the shake.

Jenny,

I would definately try it in small amounts. I have problems with sugar alcohols. Two sf chocolates, I'm fine..the 3rd?  the rest of the day. Not quite to , but I think I'd probably feel better if only I could. You know..that kind of feeling. Once you know you are ok with it, sure, try doing a shake with it...with skim milk. I was told from the get-go..and I know there are folks on here that disagree..but anyway, I was told that it counts as a liquid if and only if it is sugar-free AND EXTREMELY low on calories (like Crystal light, chicken broth, sf popcycles, water), Decafinated, and decarbonated. So I would say no, it does not count as a liquid. I also don't count milk or my protein drinks as 'liquids' as they are more than just 10 -20 calories. Remember that the more WATER you get in, the better you lose weight...so to count everything and anything as part of your 'liquids', you are just robbing yourself of being able to  lose the maximum you can...and while you are in your honeymoon stage (the first year post-op), you really don't want to do that. Bon' Apetite! Sherri

Hi Jenny K! I'm almost 4 yrs out and had surgery from St. V's Bariatric  program. The answer is to your question is usually no. For the most part ice cream (any type) is usually very hard to break down = very painful. Cramping, nausea, etc. (may also depend on the surgery you had too)  And also it was one of the foods that should be avoided. I also remember in the nutrition class the dieticians saying  ice cream should be avoided. If you are in your "newbie" stage I do know that you can  have unlimited SF Fudgecicles. They do count as a liquid, or any SF popsicle.  I'll admit way further out (past goal and over 2 yrs out ,though, I've had ice cream and for me it just didn't work out too well. Good Luck! -Kimmy A

Besides being harder to handle,... it is empty calories. I would save it for those rare occasions, like a birthday or something.
