What is the breathing machine I have to bring home?

When she scheduled my pre-op testing she said they would show me how to use the breathing machine and I will be taking it home?  She said I would use it for 2 weeks before surgery.  What is that for?  I do not have apnea or anything else so i was curious what that is all about! Thanks!

It's just a small hand held plastic device that helps you exercise and increase your lung capacity.  It will help you to oxygenate your body before surgery and will help rid your lungs of fluid after surgery.  If you've ever had surgery before or had pneumonia you may have used one.  It has a clear tube with a plastic ball inside that you keep "floating" in the tube as you breathe.

Never heard of it.  I have had surgery but a D&C for a miscarriage, a cyst removed on my ovary and 2 c-sections.  But never heard of it.  Good to know it isn't anything horrible though!   Thanks!

Yep, it's called an incentive spirometer.  My girls are fascinated by it, and remind me to "take your breafs Mommy!" My little one, almost 4, was even using it last week when she had a cough and told me it was helping her "breave better".
