PAIN 3 1/2 weeks post-op, "Normal"

Hi everyone, I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op and have done reasonable well since surgery. I was off pain meds after five days and been pain free until now. 3-4 days ago I have had discomfort on my left side, and when I cough, laugh, or stand up sometimes I get a sharp stabbing pain just for a second or two.I called Dr. and he said this is "normal" with a lot of patients, since most of the larger work was done thru that insision area. ( I had Lap RNY on 3-20-08 ). I did over do it regarding lifting my Grandson and did some raking and yard work which may have contributed to it ?? Well just wanted to know if anybody has gotten pain several weeks post-op after being pain free most early out. My Dr. called this normal, just wanted to see how normal this might be.   Thanks, Dave    

Dave, For that particular incision area, it sounds normal to me. Just be careful over-doing it and gradually work your way up to being 'grand-dad' again. My grandkids are still waiting for Mamaw's lap to be available (from my hernia surgery 3/3). Give it time..give yourself time. Sherri

That sounds pretty normal, just keep an eye on it.  That was my worst incision.  When I did over do it, that was the one that complained the most.  Like I said, just keep an eye on it and take it easy.  Good luck!!

Listened to a St. V's facillatator at Plainfield support group[ that had an LRnY 45 days ago and had left side pain.  It is normal according to her.  That is the side the most work is done.  If you are a st V's patient she facilates the speedway meeting tuesday 6:30 to 8:00 at speedway library.
