Surgery/Dumping
I don't think you imagined it. I really believe that certain doctors cut away more of the gland that causes the dumping syndrome.....the one that processes the sugars properly.....and then you dump more. I haven't had any trouble at all, and I don't dump. But I do read about others, and have talked to several that dump at the slightest sugar intake. Hope you get more insight on this.

Dr. C told me that the amount of intestine they cut away is where the sugar hits and when you try to eat sugar or high fat foods after surgery, because sugar absorbs so quickly the sugar "dumps" into a part of the intestine that has never had sugar in it. Carbs absorb faster than other nutrients, thats why you get so hungry after a carb binge. I dumped on everything with any sugar in it or high fat foods for a year. Now I can eat a few more things without dumping. I think 19 grams of sugar is my limit. High fat still makes me dump or at least not feel so good. My weight point is +5 pounds of what I want to be, so if I get there , I go right back on program and follow it religiously, no sugar, bread, fat. Mostly protein, protein, protein. I do not dump on natural sugars like apples or grapes. Once I get tht weight back off I will eat a little sugar again.
The last time I did this I lost the 5 pounds + a few more, and then thought I would eat an ice cream sandwich, it sounded good ( I can eat about half). I had been off of sugar for about 3 weeks. That half an ice cream bar made my dump terribly, massive nausea then massive diarrhea . Now I remind you before my 3 week sugar fast I could eat the 1/2 sandwich with no problem. I questioned Dr. C about that at my 2 year checkup and she said its a learned intestinal behavior. If you gradually give yourself sugar the new area of intestine that never had sugar before gets used to it. The farther out you go that part of the intestine learns to absorb more, thus(the honey moon period of weight loss). she stressed that is why exercise is so important especially the farther out you are, and following the plan. Burn mor calories than you eat. continue to measure things or use fit day or the other site I can't think of the name. When I need to get busy I use fit day and its unbelieveable how much more you take in than you realize. This is just a tool and we can cheat it. Her exact words were "you wanted this tool, I gave it to you, now use it correctly, or you will be more tempted to cheat and keeping adding a little more here and there, and before you know it you will have gained and not be able to figure out why" She scares me. No more cheating for me. If I want something sweet I will have a bite or two now thats it. Still to this day I can tell immediately when I put something in my mouth if I can tolerate it. If it is too high in sugar or fat, I get a lot of saliva. I have never heard of any gland that processes the sugar. My bypass was 90cm so that's like 3 feet of intestine. Dr. C said she doesn't go anymore than that on RNY as it makes the malabsorption of vitamins worse and more complications. Plus insurances are less likely to pay for long limbed bypass. So I don't understand by how she said it, that some dump and some don't. After I left I thought I should have asked her that. I will next time. I am pretty proud of myself, and pretty disciplined. Protein first always, I don't snack. I am below goal and happy. I watch carefully for any gain and get right back to it. I do need to work on exercise though, and I am drinking some caffeine when I had been off of it for over a year.
