Hi.  I was wondering if anyone had to have a total hysterectomy after having the gastric by pass operation?  If so, any complications?  Anything the gyno should know specifically dealing with the gastric by pass?  The same surgeon is not doing the hysterecomy that did the gastric by pass.  Thanks!

Stacy, My hysto was prior to my RNY but I would think anatomy-speaking, the gastric bypass should have no affect on the hysto. I would be sure your GYN knows about your bypass...and any other past surgeries/medical issues. I would also be sure the hospital knows all of this when you register. It IS something important for the surgical staff to know...especially the one controlling putting you out...that way you can be sure andy/all tubes are inserted correctly. I keep a record in WORD on my computer that includes: All my doctors/their specialty/their phone numbers, All my meds... scripts/OTC and their strength & dose information, all past surgeries w/dates (month-year), all past procedures (like the endoscopes), date of last 'routine' tests (mammagram, pap, colonoscopy), and last but not least...allergies. As I go to a doctor, I update any script changes, add surgery/procedure, etc. The day before I have a doctor's appointment, I bring it up on my pc, make any changes it needs, then print off a copy to bring with me. Mine is two pages long. I would be in such BIG trouble if I had to try to remember all of this each time I went to the doctor or hospital!          Good luck with the hysto! I sure am glad I had mine done!!!                      Sherri

I had my hysterectomy after my gastric, but I must say it was only 5 months after and I had a rough time I didn't heal well at all, I think it was because it was to soon after the RNY and my body just wasn't getting the protein or the vitamins I needed to heal, the GYN did tell me that  there is 3% someone may have problems.   HA HA,  So why did I have to be in the 3%,   I think I can safely say for the few of us that have had to have surgery soon after the weight loss surgery they do have some healing problmes.  I can tell you that my GYN call my gastric surgeon.  To make sure she wouldn't mess up- stuff, Dr. E was great he had her give me a good old Banna Bag full of Vitamins to help since I wasn't aloud to eat for 2 days.  I even had to come back a week and half  later to get a 2nd banna bag.   I hope this helps.  I really think I had so many problems due to only being 5 months out from the RNY .  I am sure you will do just fine if you are almost a year out. I was 4 years out of wls and I had a total abdominal hysterectomy, I planned it so My Gyn did her thing and then my plastic surgeon did a tummy tuck.  I stayed over night in the hospital, My gyn said I would probably want to stay a couple of days but I was up and showered and ready to leave the next day.  Its all how a person deals with pain, I have a high tollerance for it, I did take pain meds for the first week, it had no effect on my RNY nor did it cause it.  MY surgeon could have done the hysterctomy also, But I wanted a specialest for that procedure as well, and A femal doctor, that is more receptive to problems or concerns a woman would have, but there are many fine men doctors as well.  I am on harmone thearpy, you wont believe the  brain fog, and everything associated with the Total hysterectomy, I decided If I dont need it remove it.  Less chance of cancer, if its gone.  I am 6 years post op RNY and life is GRAND, I love my NEW body, lots of plastics, lots of money BUT well worth it.  I know a great web site for info and support on hysterctomy surgery .Rose
