overdoing workouts lead to slowed weight loss?

Week 1 I lost 7.4 pounds, and week 2 showed a 5.8 loss.  Right now I'm at about a 3lb loss going into tomorrow, week 3 and I wonder if I've worked out too much? Last week I walked 2-4 miles each day, took Sunday off, walked 5 miles yesterday and did an hour of water aerobics this morning.  I'm only eating 2 oz each meal, primarily protein like no sugar added yogurt at breakfast and cheese sticks or refried beans at dinner, then instant mashed potatoes and/or cheese sticks at lunch.  I am getting a minimum of 72 grams of protein in each day, and about 60-80 oz of liquids.   Obviously this isn't a stall yet, I just was hoping for a bigger loss since I ramped up my workouts.  Is my body going into panic starvation mode? I don't want to cut back on my workouts, but I also don't want my weight loss to stall.

Wow, I hope not.  Cant wait to hear what the responses are.  The only thing is that whole  building muscle mass thing is heavier thing.  Have you taken you measurements? I have seen posted before that say some people lose inchs when they are not losing pounds.

We all go through periods where we stall for a bit. Don't obsess about it.  You do need to get in all the protein and water required.  Remember also that you are building muscle and muscle is heavier than fat.  You are doing great just keep it up and the scales will continue to go down.

Jan is right.  Think about how much weight you have already lost in how little time.  When was the last time you lost over 16 lbs in just 3 weeks?  NEVER I bet.  We lose weight so fast in the beginning that sometimes the body just needs some time to "catch up" to all the changes.  And you are building muscle, which does weigh more than fat.  Don't panic.  You are going to see slow downs and even stalls during this journey.  Just keep with the program and it will all work out.  This is not just another diet you will fail at.  This is a life long journey to better health and well being.  You will be fine, just trust yourself.

Thanks ladies! My biggest fear is that I was slowing my weight loss by working out too much for the calories I'm taking in.  I have never lost 16 lbs in 3 weeks before, and I still feel fantastic, so I know I'm doing the right things.  Inches are definitely dropping...I haven't taken my measurements yet, but I can tell with my clothes and my face even looks slimmer.  Woohoo!!

Amy just learned from Sam Carney the nurse who runs the Frankfort support group that if you plateau that you should up your protein. A woman who was older was having that same problem and that is what she told her to do. She said that it worked for her. Might work for you too. Good luck on whatever you do. If in doubt call or e-mail the dieticians. TTFN! Michelle

Thanks Michele! I ended up dropping 4 lbs yesterday, so definitely not at a plateau yet, but I will keep that tip in mind just in case...I'm sure it will happen eventually.  I'm starting to vary my workouts, and add intervals on the treadmill, so I'm getting plenty of exercise.  Inches are definitely dropping...I can see a big difference in my hips and thighs.
