St. Vincent's Carmel

My husband has just been approved for RNY! And only after two weeks after submitting to insurance! My question is, at St. Vincent's in Carmel, Indiana, when are you given a sedative? I had my surgery two years ago and was extremely nervous the last half hour before surgery. I had to walk into the OR, and sit for a few minutes before the anesthesiologist came in. I wasn't given anything until I was on the table, and by that point I was ready to bolt! He is nervous. Is a sedative administered early to take the edge off?

Nope, they do not routinely offer you a sedative.  They do it just as you described ... walk in, lay down, then go to sleep.  It's normal to be nervous, but you got through it, and I'm sure he can too!

I was given Celebrex when the prepared me before surgery.  When it was time I walked back to surgery.  The anesthesiologist was there when I got there.  I laid down.  He was there and got started.  I felt him give me a shot to numb the area before he started my IV.  After that I don't remember anything until I woke up in recovery. Thanks Carol. I posted this same question on another forum, and an RN advised us to insist on being given something. We are the consumer after all and we are paying for this. I had my RNY surgery in a much smaller hospital. I thought that was why I had to walk into the OR. Then after my RNY I had an outpatient surgery in another smaller hospital, but I was wheeled into the OR. They gave me something and all I remember is the gurney hitting the doors and I was out. But St. Vincent's is HUGE! You'd think they'd be able to at least give you a ride into surgery! LOL.

Yes, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to ask for something to take the edge off, if you know you're nervous. Just talk to someone ahead of time.

Just be sure to ask your surgeon for something BEFORE the day of surgery, so they understand your wishes.  I really liked walking into the OR.  Afterall, it's not like I was sick or hurt and couldn't walk on my own.  Why would I need a wheelchair?
