I have been keeping a very close ey on what I eat since my pre-op class and I noticed that I get head hunger. I hear it only gets worse after your surgery.   What did you do to battle and beat head hunger? Thansks, Kim

Lots of water. Sometimes chewing gum. Developed some new interets. Read books.

But remember that head hunger is normal so don't punish yourself when it happens. It's normal.

Kim I to have been plagued with head hunger and I can't tell you how terrible it was the week immediately following my surgery! I was wanting a pizza so bad I could almost taste it. Let me tell you having my husband eat anything and everything for in front of me hasn't helped either. I wish that these men would think before they act on something.   I wish I could tell you what to do but since I don't really know for myself then I wouldn't begin to know what to tell you. Good luck on it and let me know if you find the ansswwer to your problem as I can allways use the info too. Thanks and good luck! Michelle

My biggest way to cure head hunger when I was first out was to crunch on ice.  I know some nuts don't like that, but it kept the liquids in, and it gave me the "idea" of chewing on something different.  I kept Sonic in business just from buying ice from them by the bags full.  Also, SF popcicles work well as well.  The flavor gives you the thought of more varieties as well.  Drink plenty of water, read a book, chew gum, walk. All of these, and so many more techniques may help you......you just have to work with it enough to figure out what works for you the best.  Good luck!

Just wondering...I thought in our nutrition class they told us we could NEVER have chewing gum again.  Did I dream that, or is that true??  Melissa

My class never stated that. Then again - my class was for banders. I'm pretty sure the concern with gum is the possibilty of swallowing it though.

Head hunger prior to surgery I can understand.. Feed i****er, and protien... But I honestly did not have head hunger after surgery.. I had the problem of NEVER wanting to eat for months and months after surgery. Then I had to FORCE myself to eat. But then again I was trying so hard to get my protien in it was like I was ALWAYS drinking my protien.. Worry about one thing at a time... but honestly...a lot of time hunger pangs is caused by lack of water Best of luck... you can do it!!! Linda Kay

First, the chewing gum issue.  I remember that from pre-op class also.  I believe they said it was because it could get "caught" if swallowed and cause all kinds of problems because you cannot digest gum.   I do chew gum but am very careful. I am 48 days shy of 3 years out from surgery.  I must say I constantly battle head hunger.  Lately head hunger has been winning.  I've put on 6 lbs.  Doesn't sound like much, but that can lead to much, much more.  Today is the first day back in the fight.  I am going to fight my emotional roller coaster head hunger!  And I WILL WIN!   I've enlisted help from everyone around me.  I'm cleaning out the cabinets, I'm going to keep busy, and exercise.  I've already ran 4 miles this morning and I hope to be able to work out in the yard today.   It's funny how you can talk yourself into eating while trying to talk yourself out of it!    I was told by one of the "nuts" that  when head hunger strikes, drink water.  It is usually a way your body is telling you it's thirsty!    Well, today, the "tool belt" has been put on.  And I am using every tool that I have been taught!  Good luck on your surgery!
