Birth Control?
Is anyone willing to tell what types of birth control they have tried and which ones they prefer? I took the pill while I was in college, but I haven't used birth control in YEARS! I really don't even know a whole lot about the options available. I just assumed I would call my obgyn and have her give me a script for the pill and the problem would be solved, but it might not be that easy... I have heard that most doctors don't recommend the pill for post-op because of the malabsorbtion, and I believe there are some options (like the patch) that aren't recommended for obese people. I plan on making an appointment with by obgyn and getting her take on this matter, but I wanted to see what you ladies had to say too. BTW, getting tubes tied and/or vasectomy aren't options for us right now. I'm not necessarily wanting to have more kids in the near future, but I also am not ready to eliminate the possibility. Thanks! Melissa
Melissa,
My sister was on the pill when she had her RNY. She had alot of irregularity then. Her gyn felt that she wasn't asorbing the pills correctly. She switched her over to the birth control shot. One shot every 6 months and you are good to go. It might be something you'd want to talk over with your gyn.

Hi Mommylissa,
I had the Mirena IUD put in about a month before surgery. It is good for 5 years or can be taken out at anytime. The Insurance I used to have when I had bella ( st francis-mplan) Didn't cover sterilizations or I would have been "fixed" I now have Anthem so at some point I want "fixed" LOL...But no surgeries for me anytime soon! Good Luck with surgery!!! Quick healing :)

My ob/gyn doctor does research on wls post-op pregnancy and gynecological issues. He highly recommends the Mirena. It's an IUD, and you can find out more information at the link below.

You do have to be on your period in order to have it placed. I've had to wait almost 4 months to get mine. LOL.

I just had the Mirena put into my 16 yr old after she gave birth to prevent any near future pregnancies. She knew she would suck at the pill...she likes it so far. My other daughter is going to have the shot. She thought about the implant but could not handle some foreign object in her arm. Creeped her out. I think it just depends on your lifestyle and how often you want to deal with birth control. After this unexpected, but now blessed grandbaby....I need some peace of mind knowing this is not going to happen again for a long while and they both realize condoms are not all they can be as far as birth control!
I came here looking to see if anyone had anything to say about the weather close to home (born and raised about half hour from IN) and found this. LOL I am on the pill and next month I am starting a new one that is high in estrogen since I am getting cysts like I am not on the pill. My OBGYN has been great working with me on this. The bottom line is that your doc should work with you and figure out what will work. Also my surgeon says two forms of birth control until the weight stablizes. So it's the pill and rain coats for us.

My husband had a vasectomy in 2004 after I almost died giving birth to our second daughter. It was a crap decision to make, but we were so thankful I was still alive, we did it.
My OB did put me on Yaz last fall to deal with my freaky cycle and moderate to severe PMDD, as Yaz is the only BCP approved by the FDA to deal with PMDD. (could I have used one more freaking acronym in that sentence??) I just finished my second period since surgery, and it came early and lasted a lot longer, so I don't know if I'm going to stay on the Yaz. I've actually skipped it for several days, and if my PMDD is better now that I'm losing weight and working out a lot, then I'm not going to stay on it. I'm almost 37, we don't need any form of birth control, so if I can stop taking a pill then I will.
My surgeon didn't have any issues with me being on Yaz, and I took it while in the hospital even (since Catholic hospitals won't provide BCP). My best friend used to be on Depo after the birth of her 2nd son, third child total between she and her husband. In the fall of 2004 she stopped the shots as they wanted to have another child together. One year later she hadn't gotten her period back yet, so they splurged and bought a huge house. Twelve weeks later she still hadn't gotten her period so she went to the OB, and she was 12 weeks pregnant....what a way to celebrate moving into their new home! Turns out that Depo can take up to a year to completely leave your system, so if you opt to go that route, stop the shot at least 6 months before you hope to conceive.

I have a tubal ligation now, but if I wanted temporary birth control, I would not use the depo provera shots. I tried that in 1999, and it left me infertile. I just seemed to look at my hubby the first two times and was pregnant. I had two babies before my second anniversary. Then after my daughter Lucy passed away, I got a depo shot. I was ready to try again in a few months. But it took anothe couplr years and clomid to have my daughter Maggie.
I would try an IUD, if you don't want to use the pill, and if you want long term protection. It sounds pertty safe, without the complications of the hormones in the pill and the patch.
