Wondering if depression/panic attacks will affect approval?

I was put on xanax and a 20 mg dose of celexa last week due to increased depression and panic attacks. I have never been treated for the panic attacks before. I was wondering since its in my medical records will it affect me getting approval for WLS. This is something I have been fighting for awhile now. Its all due to a couple family members always causing problems. Im hoping that now that I have cut them out of my life that atleast most of my stress will go away. Hope you all have a wonderful week and have fun at Holiday World Friday. (((HUGS))))

It is hard to say whether it will effect whether you are approved or not.  I have a long history of depression and had four hospitalizations about five years ago  for suicidal thoughts, and I was still approved.  That being said, my approval seemed to come from that fact that I have had losts of counseling and I could communicate with Dr. Stote (the psychologist at St. Vincent's who did my psych assessment) my coping skills and how I have learned to handle my depression.  Depending on whether you are currently in or have had therapy and how you are handling the stress now will determine whether you are approved.  I know that Dr. Stote told me that it is not whether I am approved, but what I will be required to complete prior to getting the surger--he said more therapy, group counseling, etc, might be required--in the end though I didn't have to do any of that because I provided them with all my counseling and medical records proving that I had worked on the issues.   If you are having increasing anxiety attacks right now, that suggests that your anxiety is not undercontrol.  Medications such as Xanax, Ativan, etc really are short term solutions and you will need to find a better, longer-term solution for them. One thing I need to say is that, yes the family members may seem to be the cause of the stress and it might be totally appropriate to cut them out of your life, however often it is the way that we chose to react to a situation that causes the stress. If your family members are doing things that you are chosing to react negatively to, that is your choice.  Therapy to look at that dynamic would be optimal. Good luck!

I have/had high depression with panic attacks - even during my approval period. I was approved. Don't stress about it. It shouldn't be a problem against you at all. Blessings Jodi

I was taking 20mg of Celexa when I had my psych. eval. and they approved me.  I would also look at what mg of Xanax you are taking and as someone else said that it is a short term med to help you through a tough period, not for chronic anxiety.   But don't worry, just be straight foward and honest.

I have suffered some pretty severe depressions for years. I was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder to get the big picture. Anyway, I was approved, but Dr. Stote required me to attend some support groups, and continue to attend counseling (which wasn't a problem, I find it very helpful). I don't think it should stand in the way of you getting surgery. I was going to add though, that in the 9 months afterwards, I had ALOT of ups and downs. My meds apparently didn't absorb the same, and it took awhile to get the new combination figured out. So that might be something you'll want to be prepared for.

My Dr. had asked me if bipolar runs in my family and I had said no. But I went home and was thinking about. It hasnt been said or anything but I think myself and 3 of my cousins might have it. Ive noticed about myself that I rearrange the bills to be able to go spend money then have to play catch up later. My other 2 cousins are even worse than I am about it. So when i go back on the 3rd of july i'm going to talk to her about it and see what she thinks. Thanks very much Linda for the help and to all the others also. Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

If that means your bi polar then I know a lot of people bi polar, who told you if you rearrange bills to spend money and then have to play catch up means your bi polar?  Just wondering cause that seems like a pretty weird way to diagnoss that disorder. I have suffered from panic attacks and some depression, and all the time I have been treated I have never been diagnosed as bi polar. And I have done that before.                                                                                                                          Now my oldest son has  been diagnosed with bi polar  and boy you can tell it in him, some days he is on cloud nine and other days he has had it with everything and he's tired of working and just wants to run his motorcycle into a tree.                                                                                                                                                                            I am in the process of waiting for Dr.Stote to approve me for sugery, I have approval from insurance and was waiting on a date when they found out that he hadn't approved the surgery for me. I told him I had had panic attacks so bad i wouldn'd leave my home ten years ago, but nothing even close to that in the last few years, but he wants to make sure I have someone to fall back on in case I start having them again after surgery.    My advice would be just answer all questions honestly and don't offer anything. Best of luck to you.
