My docctor's office told me that UHC might now be requiring a 5 year history of obesity.  True?

In some states, not all. And it's really actually pretty easy to overcome.  First, most of us have that, and second, if not, we can show we have enough failed diets and comorbs to qualify on appeal.

Thanks.  I feel a little better.  Hopefully, that requirement hasn't taken effect in Idaho.  Also, my UHC policy is through Union Pacific and the doctor's office told me it is very different that other policies.  I actually cannot show a BMI over 40 for the past 5 years.  My BMI is over 35, but I don't know if that will do.  Also, I have a few comorbs, but no "major" ones.  They do not go back 5 years though.  Any chance on appeal with that?

I was told the same thing when I first started the process, I'm in NC.  I only started really going to the Dr about 2 yrs ago, before then it was very rarely, so I really didn't have a weight history.  I was worried that I wouldn't be approved, so I had my PCP fax over what they did have to my surgeon and they submitted what info they had to the insurance.  It went so smoothly and I didn't have a problem w/UHC at all. Of course I have several co-morbities and that may have had something to do with it, but you shouldn't have a problem.  Good luck!!!!
I have UHC in NC as well.  How long did it take you to get approved?  My stuff was sent in yesterday.  i was told 3-5 business days before its scanned into the system then 30 business days for a decision.  I plan on annoying them faster than that. Just curious what you experienced. Melissa

Melissa,

I was told the same thing, it was submitted to them by fax on a Monday, they had it in their system by Wednesday and I was approved by the next Wednesday.  I guess they have to tell you it takes that long just in case.  Good Luck!

Well, I'm still waiting.  I went in on Wednesday 1/31.  My friend who went with me (same insurance) got approved yesterday.  I called, but no decision has been made on mine.  2/807 Update:  I called UHC and I am approved.  YEAH!!!
