Self-Employed, Coverage?

Okay... after several months of researching WLS, I am ready to take the steps.  I am 31 years old, married and self-employed.  My husband lost his job in June and we no longer have insurance.  Yeah.  I know, it's bad.  We had COBRA, but it was way too expensive and we had to cancell.  I have a BMI of 43, but no "diagnosed" co-morbidities.   I have back problems, can't breathe, depression, ... So, my first question is.. I am about to purchase insurance coverage for myself in the next day or two... my deciding factor is the likelihood that they will approve me for WLS.   What companies would you recommend?   How long will I need to be covered before I can request approval for the surgery? Can I get covered today and get approved right away? Help! I have read these boards for hours and can't get a really good answer. I live in Illinois if that helps.

I'm not sure if this is a company only in NY but it's called GHI. My emplouer currently pays $430 a month for coverage for me with Anthem BC/BS ... there's a WLS exclusion on our plan. I am purchasing an individual plan with GHI for almost the same amount. My employer is going to pay for it and cancel the BC/BS policy. This GHI plan they call "hospitalization only" meaning it doesn't cover office visits. I'm going from one plan to another with no break in coverage, so they can't call it a pre-exsisting condition. I've been told GHI covers the Lap Band. I'm getting most of the pre-op tests done while still on my BC/BS plan, then after surgery I will just have to pay doctor visits out of pocket. *crossing my fingers this works* Maybe you could  find a similar type of policy in your state?  Good luck.
