Self Pay?

I am having trouble getting Aetna HMO to pay for my surgery.  Does anyone know, if you pay for the surgery yourself, and there is some type of complication related to the WLS in the future, will insurance pay for that incident or are you stuck paying for that yourself also because insurance did not cover the initial surgery?   I would probably try to find a way to pay on my own if i knew whether or not this type of stuff was covered. Thanks

If you self pay because WLS is exlcuded from your contract or you did not meet medical necessity then the insurance won't cover complications.  I'd check your exclusions to be sure, but they usually cover themselves with an exclusion for any complications as a result of a non-covered service. Having said that, many self-pay options cover you up to a certain dollar amount for complications.  I'm not a self pay, but had I been, I would have been covered up to $70k for complications.  I believe (although I'm not sure) that this is because my surgeon or hospital has some sort of complication coverage.  Check with your surgeon for details. Before you go that route are you sure that you've exhausted all efforts with the insurance company?  Many people are able to overturn prior denial.  Perhaps someone on this forum could help you if we knew why you were denied.  I'm not trying to give you false hope, however I would like to lend a hand where we can.  Afterall, this is exactly why this forum exists.
